🌼 A LITTLE FLOWER WITH A BIG JOB! 🥒

Did you know that those beautiful yellow flowers on your zucchini plant are actually edible? 😍

Zucchini plants produce both male and female flowers, and those gorgeous open blooms are an invitation for our busy little pollinators! 🐝

Once a female flower is successfully pollinated, the tiny zucchini at its base begins to grow into the delicious vegetable we all know and love.

But here’s something extra special… zucchini flowers can also be eaten! They’re delicious stuffed, battered, lightly fried or added to your favourite dishes.

🌱 Our tip: If you’re planning on harvesting the flowers to eat, leave plenty behind for pollination so your plant can keep producing!

❤️🌱 BEETROOT — FROM THE GARDEN TO THE DINNER TABLE! 🌱❤️

Sweet, earthy and packed with goodness! Beetroot is one of those vegetables that’s incredibly rewarding to grow, and the best part? You can enjoy both the roots AND the leaves! 🙌

Whether you love it roasted, pickled, grated into salads or added to homemade burgers, there’s nothing quite like homegrown beetroot!

🌿 GROWING BEETROOT IN CENTRAL WEST NSW

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers 4–6+ hours of sunshine daily. Some afternoon shade is beneficial during our scorching Cowra summers.

💧 Water: Keep soil consistently moist. Irregular watering can result in tough or woody roots.

🌱 Soil: Loose, well-draining soil free from rocks and large clumps, allowing those beautiful roots to develop!

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 10–15 cm between plants to give each beetroot room to grow.

🌻 WHEN TO PLANT?

Beetroot can be grown through much of the year here in Central West NSW, but it thrives in cooler conditions. Autumn and spring are particularly good growing seasons. During summer, provide afternoon shade, mulch and consistent watering to protect plants from extreme heat.

❤️ A LITTLE GARDENING TIP!

Don’t wait until your beetroot becomes enormous! Harvest when the roots are approximately 5–8 cm across for beautifully tender, sweet beetroot. And don’t throw away those leaves! Young beetroot greens are edible and delicious sautéed or added to salads. 🌿

💚 WHY GROW BEETROOT?

❤️ A source of fibre, folate and potassium.

❤️ Both the roots and leaves are edible.

❤️ Perfect for roasting, pickling, salads and preserving.

❤️ A fantastic addition to raised garden beds and veggie patches.

❤️ Homegrown beetroot tastes amazing!

🍅🌱 LOVE HOMEMADE SAUCES? YOU NEED ROMA TOMATOES IN YOUR GARDEN! 🌱🍅

If you love cooking with fresh, homegrown produce, Roma tomatoes are an absolute must-have! ❤️

Known for their rich flavour, firm flesh and fewer seeds, these beautiful, oval-shaped tomatoes are perfect for homemade pasta sauces, passata, soups and preserving!

🌿 GROWING ROMA TOMATOES IN CENTRAL WEST NSW

☀️ Sunlight: Love 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily, with some afternoon protection during our scorching Cowra summers.

💧 Water: Deep, consistent watering is essential. Irregular watering can contribute to blossom-end rot.

🌱 Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost and organic matter.

🪴 Support: Although Roma tomatoes generally grow as compact, bushy plants, a sturdy stake or cage helps support their heavy fruit!

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–70 cm between plants for healthy growth and airflow.

🌻 WHEN TO PLANT?

Spring through early summer is ideal here in Central West NSW, once the risk of frost has passed.

🍅 A LITTLE GARDENING TIP!

Roma tomatoes often produce a large crop over a relatively short period, making them fantastic for gardeners wanting to harvest enough tomatoes for a big batch of homemade sauce!

Mulch around the base to retain moisture, and avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth rather than fruit.

❤️ WHY GROW ROMA TOMATOES?

🍅 Rich, delicious flavour.

🍅 Fewer seeds and less watery flesh than many slicing varieties.

🍅 Perfect for sauces, roasting, preserving and freezing.

🍅 A great source of vitamin C, potassium and lycopene.

🍅 Productive plants that make the most of your summer veggie patch!

And let’s be fair… there’s something pretty special about making a pasta sauce from tomatoes you’ve grown yourself! 🤤🍝

🍅🌱 LITTLE TOMATOES, BIG FLAVOUR! 🌱🍅

There’s something incredibly satisfying about picking fresh cherry tomatoes straight from your own garden! Sweet, juicy and bursting with flavour, they’re one of our favourite summer crops here at Rust & Roots! ❤️

And the best part? With the right care, cherry tomato plants can produce an abundance of fruit throughout the warmer months!

🌿 GROWING CHERRY TOMATOES IN CENTRAL WEST NSW

☀️ Sunlight: Love 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. During our scorching Cowra summers, some afternoon shade can help prevent heat stress.

💧 Water: Deep, consistent watering is essential. Avoid letting the soil completely dry out between watering.

🌱 Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost and organic matter.

🪴 Support: Provide a sturdy stake, cage or trellis to support growing branches and developing fruit.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–70 cm between plants for good airflow, depending on the variety.

🌻 WHEN TO PLANT?

Spring through early summer is ideal here in Central West NSW, once the risk of frost has passed.

🍅 A LITTLE GARDENING TIP!

Did you know extreme heat can affect tomato pollination?

When temperatures climb above 35°C, flowers may drop without producing fruit. Keep your plants well-watered, mulch around their roots and provide afternoon shade during heatwaves!

❤️ WHY GROW CHERRY TOMATOES?

🍅 They’re sweet, delicious and perfect for salads, lunchboxes and snacking!

🍅 They’re a source of vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants.

🍅 Regular harvesting encourages continued production on many varieties.

🍅 They’re fantastic for garden beds and large pots!

And let’s be fair… half of them never make it inside because they’re too delicious straight off the vine! 😂

🥒🌱 SMALL CUCUMBERS, BIG HARVESTS! 🌱🥒

Crisp, refreshing and absolutely delicious! Lebanese cucumbers are a fantastic addition to your summer veggie patch, especially if you love picking fresh produce straight from the garden! 💚

Unlike larger cucumber varieties, Lebanese cucumbers are smaller, tender-skinned and perfect for snacking, salads and lunchboxes!

🌿 GROWING LEBANESE CUCUMBERS IN CENTRAL WEST NSW

☀️ Sunlight: Love 6–8 hours of sunshine daily, with some afternoon protection during our scorching Cowra summers.

💧 Water: Keep soil consistently moist. Irregular watering can affect fruit quality and contribute to bitterness.

🌱 Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost.

🪴 Support: Grow them vertically on a trellis or climbing frame to save space, improve airflow and keep fruit off the ground!

📏 Spacing: Approximately 40–60 cm apart when growing vertically.

🌻 WHEN TO PLANT?

Spring through summer is ideal here in Central West NSW, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

🥒 A LITTLE GARDENING TIP!

Harvest your Lebanese cucumbers while they’re young, usually around 10–15 cm long.

The more regularly you pick them, the more you encourage your plant to keep producing! 🙌

💚 WHY GROW THEM?

They’re wonderfully crunchy, hydrating, versatile and can be incredibly productive with the right care.

And there’s nothing quite like the taste of a freshly picked cucumber on a hot summer’s day! ☀️

🌽 SWEET AS HONEY, STRAIGHT FROM YOUR GARDEN! 🌽

There’s nothing quite like freshly picked sweet corn! Sweet, juicy and bursting with flavour, Honey Sweet Corn is a fantastic addition to your summer veggie patch. 💛

And the best part? It’s a wonderful crop to grow right here in Central West NSW!

🌱 GROWING HONEY SWEET CORN

☀️ Sunlight: Loves full sun! Aim for 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

💧 Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially when the plants begin flowering and developing cobs.

🌿 Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost. Sweet corn is a hungry feeder!

📏 Spacing: Plant approximately 25–30 cm apart, with rows around 60–75 cm apart.

🌽 Pollination: Here’s an important tip! Plant corn in blocks rather than one long row. Corn relies on wind for pollination, and grouping plants helps produce beautifully filled cobs.

🌻 WHEN TO PLANT IN CENTRAL WEST NSW?

Spring through early summer is ideal, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

Our warm Cowra summers are great for growing corn, but remember to keep the water up during those scorching days! ☀️

💛 WHY GROW HONEY SWEET CORN?

🌽 Deliciously sweet and tender.

🌽 Perfect for barbecues, salads, soups or simply boiled with a little butter!

🌽 A great source of fibre and energy.

🌽 A rewarding crop for the whole family to grow and harvest!

🌱 A LITTLE GARDENING TIP!

For the sweetest flavour, harvest your corn when the silks have turned brown and the kernels release a milky liquid when gently pressed.

Sweet corn tastes best when eaten soon after picking! 🤤

🌱 Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost and organic matter.

HAVE YOU EVER GROWN STRAWBERRIES? 🍓

Imagine stepping outside, picking a handful of fresh, sun-ripened strawberries and enjoying them straight from your very own garden! ❤️

Sweet, juicy and incredibly rewarding to grow, strawberries are a wonderful addition to any veggie patch, raised garden bed or pot!

🌿 HOW THEY GROW

Strawberries are low-growing plants that produce delicate white flowers before developing into those beautiful red berries we all love!

Many varieties also produce runners, which are little stems that spread out and develop into new strawberry plants. That means you can grow your strawberry patch over time! 🙌

☀️ WHAT THEY NEED

🍓 Sunlight: At least 6–8 hours of sunshine daily. In our hot Cowra summers, some afternoon shade can help protect them.

🍓 Water: Regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist, but never waterlogged.

🍓 Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost and organic matter.

🍓 Spacing: Allow approximately 25–30 cm between plants for healthy growth and airflow.

🍓 Mulch: Straw mulch is fantastic for keeping the fruit off the soil, retaining moisture and reducing the risk of rot!

🌱 WHAT TO DO

Plant your strawberry seedlings with their crowns sitting at soil level. Avoid burying the crown, as this can cause rotting.

Water at the base of the plants where possible, remove damaged leaves and keep an eye out for slugs, snails and birds!

Once your strawberries turn a beautiful, even red, they’re ready to harvest! ❤️

🍓 WHY GROW STRAWBERRIES?

❤️ They’re a wonderful source of vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants.

❤️ Perfect for fresh snacking, smoothies, desserts and homemade jam!

❤️ Great for growing in pots, hanging baskets and small garden spaces.

❤️ Many varieties produce fruit over an extended season with the right conditions.

❤️ They’re a fantastic way to introduce children to growing their own food!

🌻 A LITTLE GARDENING TIP!

Did you know strawberries don’t continue to ripen after they’re picked?

For the sweetest flavour, leave them on the plant until they’re fully red and ripe! 🍓

And remember, not all strawberry varieties fruit at the same time. Some produce one main crop, while others can provide multiple harvests throughout the growing season.

🌱💚 LET’S TALK CELERY! 💚🌱

Crisp, crunchy and packed with goodness! Did you know celery is a fantastic addition to your home veggie patch?

Whether you’re adding it to soups, stews, salads, stir-fries or enjoying it fresh with your favourite dip, there’s nothing quite like harvesting your own homegrown celery! 🥬

🌿 HOW IT GROWS

Celery grows upright in clusters of long, crunchy stalks topped with beautiful green leaves.

Unlike some vegetables, celery takes its time to mature, but with a little patience and the right care, you’ll be rewarded with fresh, flavourful stalks straight from your garden!

☀️ WHAT IT NEEDS

💚 Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. In our hot Central West summers, some afternoon shade is beneficial!

💚 Water: Celery LOVES moisture! Keep the soil consistently damp, but not waterlogged.

💚 Soil: Rich, fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of compost and organic matter.

💚 Spacing: Allow approximately 20–30 cm between plants.

💚 Mulch: A generous layer helps retain moisture and keeps those roots cool.

🌱 WHAT TO DO

Plant your seedlings into well-prepared soil, water regularly and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser throughout the growing season.

Celery prefers cooler growing conditions, so protecting it from extreme summer heat is important here in Cowra.

Once the stalks are large enough, you can harvest the outer stalks individually, allowing the centre to continue growing! 🙌

🥬 WHY GROW CELERY?

💚 Naturally low in calories.

💚 Contains fibre, vitamin K and potassium.

💚 Great for adding flavour and crunch to everyday meals.

💚 Both the stalks AND leaves are edible, meaning less waste in the kitchen!

And here’s a little gardening tip! 🌻

Celery doesn’t like drying out! Inconsistent watering can result in tough, stringy or bitter stalks, so keeping that moisture consistent is the secret to a beautiful harvest.

🎃🌱 BUTTERNUT PUMPKIN — A SUMMER GARDEN FAVOURITE! 🌱🎃

There’s something pretty special about growing your own pumpkins! And butternut pumpkins are one of our favourites here at Rust & Roots! 🤎

Sweet, nutty, delicious and incredibly versatile in the kitchen, they’re a fantastic addition to your summer veggie patch.

🌿 HOW THEY GROW

Butternut pumpkins grow on vigorous, trailing vines that spread across the ground, producing beautiful yellow flowers before developing into those familiar pear-shaped pumpkins!

Give them plenty of room to roam, and they’ll reward you with a wonderful harvest.

☀️ WHAT THEY NEED

🎃 Full sun — at least 6–8 hours daily.

🎃 Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of compost.

🎃 Regular, deep watering, particularly during flowering and fruit development.

🎃 Plenty of space! Allow approximately 1–2 metres between plants, depending on your growing setup.

🎃 Mulch to retain moisture and keep weeds down.

🌱 WHAT TO DO

Plant once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Keep the vines well watered, encourage pollinators into your garden and allow the pumpkins to mature on the vine.

You’ll know they’re getting close to harvest when their skin turns a deep, even tan colour, the rind becomes hard and the stalk begins to dry.

🤎 WHY GROW THEM?

Butternut pumpkins are packed with beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A, along with fibre and vitamin C.

They’re delicious roasted, mashed, made into soups, added to curries or baked into homemade goodies!

And one of the best things? Properly cured and stored butternut pumpkins can last for months, meaning you can enjoy your summer harvest well into the cooler seasons! 🍂
