In Australia, we live amongst one of the most fantastic climates and most impressive landscapes the world has to offer - connecting our architecture and our lives with both is an opportunity we should all take. The American architect Tom Kundig said 'People who build their own home are very courageous... these are people who are curious about life'... undertaking building a house will, at the same

time, be one of the most challenging and one of the most rewarding things a person can do. Taking clients on this journey on which they will learn not only more about architecture, but about themselves and creating architecture that improves peoples lives one building at a time is what Ironbark Architecture + Design is all about.

Exciting (and humbling) news that our Alcheringa project has been shortlisted for the 2026 AIA Awards! Alcheringa has been a labour of love, we started work on the project in Ironbarks first year of business (2015) and with time managed to overcome all manner of obstacles for the project to now be beautifully complete.

Whilst winning awards is not what it's about, it's nice to get recognition from peers that all the values and ideology we bang on about to everyone is recognised for the value it contributes to the built environment.

Many hands and many years went into bringing this project to life, thank you to all who had the commitment to see it through.

Beela House is audacious – but not in an overt, attention-seeking way. Its audacity lies in the way it is a measured, deeply human response to place, replacing a compromised suburban dwelling with a house that breathes, adapts and embraces modern, daily living.

The original home was at the mercy of the elements. Poor positioning on the block led to Western sun pouring relentlessly through misplaced windows. The backyard was awkwardly severed by an oversized pool and the internal spaces relied heavily on heating and cooling systems to remain usable. While we explored renovation, ultimately we agreed that this home deserved a fresh start. Starting from the beginning meant we could approach the design with an intent to downsize the home, whilst making it a calm, spacious and enduring space to live.

Behind a restrained, almost protective street facade, Four Gardens House unfolds into an H format, with two central courtyards and a connecting breezeway. The central courtyards create visual connections across the home and allow multiple spaces to be perceived at once.

Alcheringa is a bushland home shaped by its archaeologically-significant and remnant-bushland site. Two pavilions frame a sandstone outcrop and occupy the footprint of a former dwelling to limit disturbance. Orientation and material selection support passive comfort, bushfire resilience and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
