NT Chapter - Australian Institute of Architects The Australian Institute of Architects is a professional body for architects in Australia.

The Institute actively works to improve the quality of our built environment by promoting quality, responsible and sustainable design. The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (trading today as the Australian Institute of Architects) has been active in the Northern Territory since 1952. The Darwin Branch was created with a Southern Area Regional Committee established in Alice Springs during th

e early part of 1983. Today, the Australian Institute of Architects represents over 85 members throughout the Northern Territory with the Council comprising members located in both Darwin and Alice Springs. The membership of the AIA is drawn from architects throughout the Northern Territory. Its key roles included member representation, organisation of the annual architectural awards, the promotion of architecture to the general public and various other activities throughout the year. The AIA also organises the annual Architecture Festival which includes exhibitions, talks, competitions and guided walks around Darwin and Alice Springs. The AIA has expanded to include student organisations such as SONA and has a particularly active young architects group.

Your creations will light up the tables at the 2026 NT Chapter Architecture Awards!

Design a small architectural model to hold one or more LED tealight candles, creating a glowing centrepiece that can sit on the dining tables throughout the evening. Anyone can enter!

Drop off your creation at the George Brown Gardens Visitor Centre by Friday, 26 June, judging to be held on the night of the NT Awards.

Bamboo is rapidly reshaping conversations around sustainable architecture. As a renewable, carbon-sequestering material, it offers a compelling alternative to the carbon-intensive systems that dominate construction today.

But what is bamboo, really? How do we work with it? And what might it teach us about building more responsibly?

In this talk, Ilma Ali shares her personal journey into discovering bamboo as a building material, from initial curiosity to immersive learning.
