I have had a lot of inquiries regarding what people can do in their gardens towards the end of January, and during the rainy days. So here's a few ideas, if you are looking for something to do;
Aerate your lawn. With the amount of rain we are getting, and with the final few months of warmer weather, your lawn will be pumping out growth. Mow it a little higher to prevent the blades from burning and scorching of the sheath and roots. And give it a run through with a garden fork or motorised aerator, this allows for the rain to not only get in to the roots, but allows air in, preventing rot and fungus from spreading. Keep an eye out for curl grubs tho, more on them later.
Take some cuttings. The rain promoting growth and perfect mix of warmth and humidity, means that cuttings have an increased chance of striking. However you need to keep an eye on the rain, if we get a day or two of nothing, your cuttings will need manual watering.
Give the garden a healthy cut back. Regular pruning not only gives you a chance to monitor your plants health, but promotes new growth. You can also get a head start on training your vines and hedges, as they will be growing quickly at this time of year.
Keep an eye on your pool as well. The increased nutrients falling from the sky will not help you to keep a clean pool. And frogs will see it as a perfect nursery for their eggs and tadpoles. Its a great excuse to teach the little ones of the circle of life as well, so grab a bucket and raise some froglets.
