Slowly chipping away at the tree section of the Flora of the Wombat-Lerderderg (bit of a short-term motivation slump, but will make more progress soon!).

I captured this photo of a familiar and favourite Candlebark I drive past regularly for school drop off (I'm sure some people will know it, south of Tylden). Candlebark Eucalyptus rubida are uncommon in the heart of the Wombat-Lerderderg, where the similar Mountain Gum Eucalyptus dalrympleana is quite widespread. The most noticeable difference from a distance being that Candlebark has a grey-green canopy, where Mountain Gum is vibrant green. There are other pale-trunked species such as Snow Gum, Manna Gum and Mountain Grey Gum too, so it can be tricky to untangle which is which.

Candlebark are often quite gnarly or "poorly formed" and tend to produce good hollows. The vertical hollow pictured in this one was used by nesting Crimson Rosellas last year.

I’ve just completed a large project (for me) in the Lerderderg. Collecting seed, propagating 5750 tubestock and then planting and guarding in what was once a pine plantation. I had considerable help with the planting and guarding thank goodness! I don’t have a sense of pride in having undertaken the work- I was paid and if it wasn’t me it would have been someone else. But the scale of what is achievable by one person kinda amazes me. Hectares of plants in the ground from someone working a day here and there over a couple of years. Pretty cool to imagine what humanity could do if we had different priorities.

A few different local Eucalyptus species with a smattering of flowers at the moment. But gosh, the Red Ironbark in the Lerderderg are looking especially spectacular.

The spore-producing sporangia under the leaves of this Austral King-fern are as attractive to my eye as any flower, such an intense colour. I have put these in a paper bag to harvest the spore and will hopefully have some little ferns ready in 18 months time.

Ive been busy chipping away at a Wombat-Lerderderg flora guide, I think I’ve done all I can on shrubs (I.e. woody species other than trees) for now. A handful of shrub species missing, I’ll try to do some hiking in the spring and capture some images.

Let me know if you have any feedback. There should be plenty of errors and typos as I haven’t reviewed any of it, just plowing on trying to keep some forward momentum. Feel free to let me know of any errors.
Next onto the trees (including the eucalypts which are quite the headache). Another couple of years chipping away and it will hopefully be a handy local resource.

I remember learning about gambling and intermittent rewards back in my high school days at Daylesford Secondary. There might not be many parallels between plant cuttings and the pokies, but I do find the mixed success from batch to batch and species to species to be rather addictive. This little lot of Porcupine Ridge provenance Prostanthera denticulata (Rough Mint-bush) is a good little win (I won’t tell you about my many losses). 😉
