Slowly chipping away at the tree section of the Flora of the Wombat-Lerderderg (bit of a short-term motivation slump, but will make more progress soon!).
I captured this photo of a familiar and favourite Candlebark I drive past regularly for school drop off (I'm sure some people will know it, south of Tylden). Candlebark Eucalyptus rubida are uncommon in the heart of the Wombat-Lerderderg, where the similar Mountain Gum Eucalyptus dalrympleana is quite widespread. The most noticeable difference from a distance being that Candlebark has a grey-green canopy, where Mountain Gum is vibrant green. There are other pale-trunked species such as Snow Gum, Manna Gum and Mountain Grey Gum too, so it can be tricky to untangle which is which.
Candlebark are often quite gnarly or "poorly formed" and tend to produce good hollows. The vertical hollow pictured in this one was used by nesting Crimson Rosellas last year.
