Strong retaining walls start well before the first block is laid.

The real strength of any retaining wall is in the foundation. Whether you’re a DIY’er tackling a backyard project or a landscaper managing a full site build, getting the base right is what prevents movement, cracking, and costly repairs down the track.

A solid foundation typically starts with properly compacted crushed rock or road base. This creates a stable, load-bearing platform that distributes weight evenly and reduces shifting over time. From there, drainage is key. Installing adequate drainage material such as aggregate behind the wall helps relieve water pressure; one of the biggest causes of wall failure. Geofabric can also be used to separate soil from drainage material, keeping everything working as it should.

Cutting corners below ground might save time upfront, but it can cost you later. Solid prep, proper compaction, and quality materials are what keep retaining walls standing strong for years to come.
