Round 1 Preview -
The 2026 Western Survey Western Premier League season kicks off THIS SATURDAY with three compelling matchups. New coaches, reigning champions and a fiery Bathurst derby headline an opening round that should set the tone for another unpredictable year.
Dubbo Bulls Football Club vs Orange Waratahs Senior Football Club
Dubbo Bulls FC launch their campaign at home with a fresh face in the coaching box and a point to prove. New systems and new energy arrive under their new coach and the side will lean heavily on Gareth Williams, whose ability to link defence to attack remains central to how the Bulls want to play. Despite missing a couple of key players, they’re expected to come out firing and desperate to make a statement in front of their supporters.
The Waratahs travel with quiet confidence after their late‑season surge in 2025. Leadership will be crucial for their youthful squad, and Hugh Thornhill shapes as the steady presence they’ll rely on. With improved cohesion and a more settled roster, the Waratahs won’t be intimidated by the trip and will see this as a chance to announce themselves early.
Parkes Cobras FC vs Macquarie United Football Club
The Cobras host the reigning premiers MUFC in a massive early test. Parkes will be determined to start 2026 on the right foot, and they’ll look to the heartbeat of their side, Cameron Kopp, to steer them from the backline and set the tone for a more consistent campaign.
MUFC enters the season with a target on their back and a new head coach in Pat Auld. The premiers will be hungry to show they haven’t lost their edge and will want to begin their defence with authority.
Expect intensity, tactical discipline and a match that could easily become an early-season classic.
Bathurst 75 Football Club vs Panorama Football Club
There’s no easing into the season for Bathurst 75's or Panorama FC, who collide in an early Bathurst derby that promises fireworks. Both clubs have seen player movement over the off-season, adding unpredictability to a fixture already known for passion and rivalry.
75s will again look to Jack Press, one of the league’s greatest forwards, to ignite their attack. Panorama counter with Chris Davis, voted the safest hands in the league last year, giving them confidence at the back in a high‑emotion clash.
Derbies are rarely gentle affairs, and with both sides eager for early bragging rights, this one should deliver entertainment, emotion and plenty of noise from the stands. How quickly the new‑look squads gel could be the deciding factor.
