Just like bananas are nutritious for us, in the same way banana peels are nutritious for plants. In fact, banana peels are one of the best natural fertilisers. Banana peels are rich in potassium which is essential for plant growth and fruiting.

So how do you feed banana peels to your plants or how do you make compost out of banana peels?

Well, there are two steps you can follow.

Step 1. Soak banana peels in water in a bucket for a few days to a week. Make sure to cover the bucket tightly, otherwise it may create an odour which will attract flies and other unwanted insects. Then use this water to water your plants.

Step 2. Cut the banana peels in small pieces and then bury it in the soil around your beloved plant roots.

If you are lazy, you can directly start from step 2 and if you are super lazy like me then you do not have to follow any of the steps above but just seek forgiveness from your plants for depriving them from a great source of natural nutrient.

Anyway, as said earlier, banana peels are a great source of nutrient for plants. The only problem is that it might take a while for it to decompose. Thus, if your plant needs urgent fertilising then besides banana peels apply a quick release fertiliser.

Automatic sprinkler system or automatic irrigation system is a great addition for gardens and lawns as it not only makes life convenient but it saves time, water and money. The cost of the system may deter people from having this feature added to their garden but let me tell you, it is worth it. Your garden will not be deprived of water when you will not be able to water it as the system will take care of it, making your garden green as ever.
For days like today, just remember to turn it off and then turn it back on when the ground dries up a bit.
Good news is that your automatic irrigation system may have the capability to be upgraded so that it is weather smart, meaning on rainy days, it will turn off on its and then turn on when it is sunny.

Have you been throwing away your egg shells?

Calcium is an essential nutrient for any kind of plants such as vegetable plants, fruit plants, flower plants etc. Calcium enhances root growth and increases the quality and quantity of fruits and flowers. Egg shells are an excellent source of calcium. All you have to do is crush the egg shells using a mortar and pestle like I did or using a grinder and then distribute it around the plants. It will take about a few months for the egg shells to disintegrate and give the plants its much needed calcium.

So less waste in the bin and more back into the garden! Yay!

Gardenia, an evergreen shrub, is a great choice for landscaping your front or back yard. The type I have produces white flowers with a powerful fragrance. In full bloom, it may feel like snowflakes.

Watering and fertilising it regularly is essential to maintain it. For fertiliser, you may use cow manure, blood and bones, power feed and Scott Osmocote controlled release fertiliser for rose, gardenia and azalea.

When you go to Bunnings or other similar stores or any nursery, you will see that there is a variety of potting mixes for vegetables. But which potting mix is actually good to grow vegetables?

Well, after trying a variety of potting mixes over the years, I have figured out that the best potting mix for vegetables is the Osmocote potting mix for tomato, vegetable and herb. The price of Osmocote is a bit more than the other potting mix but it is worth the price. You can buy Osmocote in 25 litre or 50 litre packs.

Protect Your Figs from Fruit Flies!

To keep my figs safe from fruit flies, I cover them with fruit bags while they're still young. This prevents flies from lying eggs inside. Once the figs are fully ripe, I remove the bags and enjoy their sweet taste without any worries!
