Days in the Garden is expanding yet again. We are looking for another gardener to join our team of 6 as our business continues to expand. We are looking for someone who has experience and knows their weeds and how to tidy up a garden bed, as well as light pruning (shrubs, roses etc). This experience could be through previous employment, or around your own garden. The ability to use some of the heavier power tools (chainsaws/brushcutters/hedge trimmers/lawn mowers) is desirable, but not a must.
The role is casual, starting at 1-2 days a week with the potential to have more in the next few months. We pay above award wage, provide all the tools required. All you need is the will to work and transport to get you there. We are totally flexible for days and hours and work in with what you can do.
To find out more, give Day a call on 0403 792 027

Wow, May is upon us already! The weather is noticeably colder and the rains have softened the ground, making digging so much easier. Most plants are entering dormancy and their leaves are covering our gardens like a large pastel carpet.
So what can you do in May?
• This is the ideal time of year to plant citrus trees! The ground should be wet and the weather cooler, which will help them establish their roots just before the onset of the winter. It is also a great time to start planning and preparing for bare-rooted fruit trees. Decide on the optimal location and prepare the soil now by placing plenty of rich organic matter and some mulch.
• May is the time to hoist the lawnmower up to its highest position. With reduced sunshine over the next few months, extra height will give your grass the maximum amount of green it needs to collect what little sunlight is available.
• Most summer flowering annuals start to look decidedly unwell by May. It is definitely time to refresh those tired garden pots. Replace them with winter flowering annuals, such as pansies. To revive the pots, simply remove the weeds and add a bit of potting mix.
• By far one of the biggest tasks in May around the ranges is raking up leaves. Fallen leaves can smother your plants and grass, and on garden paths they present a dangerous slip hazard. But don’t just burn them, because they also make wonderful compost! If you have a mulcher, consider putting them through that first to begin the break-down process, or just run them over with the lawn mower before collecting them.
• Many plants struggle through the winter in the ranges, mainly due to frosts. If your garden isn’t blessed by natural coverage such as larger trees, you can provide your own for the younger or more delicate plants. Consider stretching shade cloth between some garden stakes above more exposed plants to help protect them for the next few months.
• Finally, with winter just around the corner, it is a good time to start planning larger construction jobs. Winter is a great time to put in sprinkler systems, build a retaining wall, a fence or some new garden beds. All of these projects take planning, so May is a great time to sit inside with a sketch of your garden and let your imagination run wild.

Did you know that residents of Cardinia shire can dispose of green waste for free this weekend?

That’s right. If you have green waste piling up, then instead of burning it, you can take it down to Lysterfield Transfer station this weekend and dispose of it for free.

All you need to do is take it down with your driver’s licence for ID. Commercial quantities of green waste and large stumps etc aren’t accepted, but any household green waste certainly is and its much better than burning it.

This is available on Friday the 26th, between 9am to 4pm, Saturday the 27th, between 9am and 4pm, Sunday the 28th, between 9am and 2pm and Monday the 29th, between 9am and 4pm.

For full details of what they will and won’t accept, you can follow the link below.

Although it wasn't a hot summer, most of the hot days are behind us now and hopefully your garden has survived the summer as the year moves into Autumn. March brings noticeably cooler conditions - especially in the evening and overnight, and the first deciduous leaves begin to change colour and fall to the ground, keeping our rakes busy! The occasional hot day in March does mean we still need to keep up watering our gardens, but nowhere near as much as what was required during the heat of the summer.

If you don’t have one already, March is the perfect time to start a compost heap. With ready-made green matter literally falling from the sky, don’t just bin those leaves that you are raking up, put them in the compost bin in layers with kitchen scraps and lawn clippings in between. Within just a few months you will have some lovely compost that you can work into your garden.

March is also the ideal time to plant shrubs, so if you are planning a new section of a garden, or maybe a hedge, now is the time to get them in the ground. Without the heat of the summer, the plant has a good few months to establish itself before the chill of the winter really hits. Dig holes for new shrubs that are wide and deep and fill with loose dirt and/or potting mix. Break up as much dirt under the plant to encourage the roots to explore. Feed with a good fertilizer and saturate with water every few days. Saturating a new plant with water every few days is preferable to a small amount of water daily as it encourage the roots to pe*****te deep down, to give the plant a firm hold.

Finally, it may seem weird to be thinking about Spring as it is a full 6 months away, but if you want a vibrant colour display this coming September and October, it is wise to start planning now. Get out and pick up a good range of winter/spring flowering bulbs, and plant them into pots or your garden beds. Doing so now will reward you with a dazzling display in a few months’ time, and you will be glad that you did.

Days in the Garden is looking for another gardener to come and join our team. Some experience would be good, at least know how to operate a lawn mower and a whipper snipper and know the difference between a blackberry and a prize rose. It can be tough work at times, but if that doesn’t scare you then we pay above award wage for your hard work plus super. The work is casual and the days are flexible and varied, starting off at 1-2 days a week, with more work available if you’re up for it. Days in the Garden is a fully insured (including workcover), professional gardening business and we need someone to represent our brand by taking pride in their work and satisfying the customer’s needs. All tools are supplied, we just need someone to start immediately, so if you think you can handle it, or know someone who might, give Day a call on 0403 792 027 now.

Did you know there is FREE green waste drop off at Pakenham and Lysterfield for residents of Cardinia in the coming weeks?

That’s right. Removing green waste is often the most expensive part of large garden maintenance in the hills, particularly if you want to do a lot of cutting back. So, the Cardinia shire council provide this free drop off option as a better and more environmentally friendly alternative to burning your green waste.

The Free Green waste drop off is available to all residents of Cardinia on the following dates.

Pakenham – Future Recycling Transfer Station. 30-32 Exchange Dr, Pakenham, from Friday the 20th Nov to Monday the 23rd Nov, 9am to 4pm.
Lysterfield – Cleanaway Resource Recovery Centre. 840 Wellington Rd, Lysterfield, from Friday 4th Dec to Monday 7th Dec, 9am to 4pm.

It is open for residential green waste in regular vehicles and trailers (not trucks). You’ll need to bring photo ID showing that your home address is within the Cardinia shire, and for a full list of details, including what you can and cannot drop off, follow this link…
