Wow, May is upon us already! The weather is noticeably colder and the rains have softened the ground, making digging so much easier. Most plants are entering dormancy and their leaves are covering our gardens like a large pastel carpet.
So what can you do in May?
• This is the ideal time of year to plant citrus trees! The ground should be wet and the weather cooler, which will help them establish their roots just before the onset of the winter. It is also a great time to start planning and preparing for bare-rooted fruit trees. Decide on the optimal location and prepare the soil now by placing plenty of rich organic matter and some mulch.
• May is the time to hoist the lawnmower up to its highest position. With reduced sunshine over the next few months, extra height will give your grass the maximum amount of green it needs to collect what little sunlight is available.
• Most summer flowering annuals start to look decidedly unwell by May. It is definitely time to refresh those tired garden pots. Replace them with winter flowering annuals, such as pansies. To revive the pots, simply remove the weeds and add a bit of potting mix.
• By far one of the biggest tasks in May around the ranges is raking up leaves. Fallen leaves can smother your plants and grass, and on garden paths they present a dangerous slip hazard. But don’t just burn them, because they also make wonderful compost! If you have a mulcher, consider putting them through that first to begin the break-down process, or just run them over with the lawn mower before collecting them.
• Many plants struggle through the winter in the ranges, mainly due to frosts. If your garden isn’t blessed by natural coverage such as larger trees, you can provide your own for the younger or more delicate plants. Consider stretching shade cloth between some garden stakes above more exposed plants to help protect them for the next few months.
• Finally, with winter just around the corner, it is a good time to start planning larger construction jobs. Winter is a great time to put in sprinkler systems, build a retaining wall, a fence or some new garden beds. All of these projects take planning, so May is a great time to sit inside with a sketch of your garden and let your imagination run wild.
