Banksia robur ......

Swamp Banksia

These have done well at my place, all but one I have grown from seed from plants I had growing at my Yass property. In Yass they only got frost burnt the first year and after that there were no problems even with the -8C temps. The new growth has a felty coating of brown hairs, which is an attractive feature. It naturally occurs in damp areas on sandy soils, but is very adaptable to a wide range of conditions and soils.
The photos show a group of them about two years appart.

Eremophila latrobei .......

The recent rains have caused a flush of flowers on my E. latrobei, this form from the SA/NT border region which I have grafted on to Myoporum insulare. I have also grafted this latrobei onto Eremophila "Big Poly" which appear to have taken. I have found Big Poly has done well in my garden, better than Myoporum.

Eremophila enata ......

common name :- Turkey Wonder

Orinates from central W A on clay to sandy soils, only gets to about .3m and about .5m wide. I have it growing on a raised section so it has good drainage here in Everton Hills. I'm having difficulty in propagating it but will keep trying.

Eremophila georgei x glabra

possible common name:- Murrin Wonder

Comes from loamy / clay soil in central WA. Grows to about 1m in height and wide.
I have grown this from a cutting and have been surprised how well it has adapted to the Brisbane climate. It is in a raised bed and gets full sun. I have now propagated more cutting from this plant after seeing how well it is enjoying it's sub-tropical life

I'm surprised by a few plants I have planted in the front garden since getting rid of the lawn. The Sturt Desert Rose ( Gossypium sturtianum) was a real surprise as the seeds I collected from my plant back in Moonta Bay about 13 yrs ago. I planted the seeds and had a good germination rate and this is one of the plants (large one at rear) which has been pruned back just recently but flowering well. In the forground are three Eremophilas, the first is Eremophila glabra x decipiens (has seen it called Red Desert) followed by Eremophila glabra ssp carnosa (often called Fruit Salad) and then Eremopila georgei x glabra which has a lilac flower and grey leaves. The two front plants have grown into each other since first planted.

Eremophila bignoniiflora x viscida

common name "Meringur Midnight

I brought this up from Yass as a tube stock and planted about 18mths ago.
It has grown quite quickly and can reach a height of about 5m and about the same in width. It can be pruned quite hard to keep it to a more compact size. It handled frost of -8 in Yass up here it has handled the extremely wet past year very well. Will adapt to most soils including clay. I have propagated a number of cuttings from this shrub.

Eremophila divaricata x E. polyclada

Common name .. Summertime Blue

A open shrub to about 2m tall and about the same wide, but enjoys a trim to keep in control and bushy.
I have found it to grow in a variety of soils and climates, from both my Moonta SA days and also Yass NSW days where it handled heavy frost.
Prefers full sun but will grow in filtered shade.
I have found it appears to do better when grow in heavier clay soils. Tolerant of drought but a good water will result in a burst of flowers.
Appears to be able to handle the high humidity of Brisbane

Buckinghamia celsissima .............

common name :- Ivory Curl tree

Small to medium tree that is in flower over the summer months.
Buckinghamia celsissima occurs naturally in north eastern QLD
The flowers are very like a Grevillea spike flower and attract the bees with their prolific nectar, the flowers are almost 30cm long and cause the branches to drop down giving the tree a weeping habit.
When not in flower the leaves are quite stunning also, they have a beautiful bronze tinge in the new growth and the juvenile leave are deeply divided. Buckinghamia celsissima makes an excellent screening plant and also a good small shade tree, it will grow in shade but not flower particularly well.
I don't know how old this tree is it was planted there prior to purchasing the house. Seed pods are much like the Grevillea pods.
