Good design doesn't fight the Queensland sun — it works with it. After 25 years designing homes, we have learned a lot about light. Natural light is a cornerstone of passive design working hand in hand with cross-ventilation, thermal mass, and orientation to create homes that stay comfortable year-round without having to always rely mechanical heating and cooling. We spend a lot of time thinking about where light enters a space, how it moves through the day, and how to use it to make your home feel bigger, warmer, and more alive.

This World Environment Day, as calls on us all to act , we are sharing some of our favourite projects where we have used passive design strategies work to create sustainable solutions where the building works with the environment rather than against it. In sub-tropical Brisbane especially, passive design should be fundamental consideration in building design.

To find out more, we have written about our approach to passive design - link in bio.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week 2026, and we are All In.

As architects, we are always thinking about place and the stories embedded in the land we build on. Whose Country are we on? What does that mean for how we design and who we design for? These aren't just week-long questions for us, but National Reconciliation Week is a great prompt to have those conversations out loud.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June, bookended by two significant dates in Australia's history — the 1967 Referendum and the Mabo Decision. This year's theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation. We are proud to be part of that conversation, and we know there is always more to learn and more to do.

Happy Reconciliation Week. Let's make it count.

It is never just a corridor or an entryway. It's anticipation. Transition. The quiet pause before what comes next.

We are delighted to be celebrating 25 years of getting those in-between moments right.

Happy Earth Day! At Reddog Architects, sustainability isn't just something we talk about on one day a year, instead we aim to weave it into everything we do. We firmly believe our environment is fragile, and that architects have a real responsibility to be part of the solution. That is why we have put together a series of articles on our website exploring how sustainability can be achieved in architecture. We cover topics including passive design, energy efficiency, sustainable materials (timber, concrete & brick), resilient design, and the reduce-reuse-recycle principle.
Whether you are building, renovating, or just curious, head here to explore the full series: https://www.reddogarchitects.com/sustainability/

We believe good architecture doesn't just serve the people inside the building; it belongs to the street too.
Every project we take on starts with a conversation about what our clients love about where they live or work. And almost always, it comes back to the neighbourhood itself and the sense of place. That is why we design with context as a starting point, not a constraint. From material choices that respond to the surroundings, to orienting a home toward a nearby park, to a façade that gives something back to the street, these are the decisions that make a building feel like it truly belongs.

We have written about what this looks like in practice, and why the relationship between a building and its neighbourhood matters more than most people realise.

We are delighted to share images of the Watermark Apartments, the latest stage of The Shoreline in Coffs Harbour. 57 residences across one, two, three and four-bedroom configurations, designed around generous open-plan living and resort-quality finishes, with the practical needs of independent senior living always front of mind.
The Watermark sits within the broader Shoreline precinct integrating independent living, residential aged care, and a community hub. Seeing this next stage of the project completed is very rewarding.

Today, on Global Recycling Day, we want take a moment to reflect on what "recycling" really means for the built environment. We believe the most sustainable decision an architect can make is this: could we keep what's already there? Salvaged timber, crushed concrete aggregate, reclaimed brick — materials that might otherwise become waste have a role to play in building a more circular industry.

We are proud to keep these questions at the heart of our work.

Density and liveability aren't opposing forces — they just take some careful thinking to get right.

Multi-residential design covers a lot of ground: high-rise apartments, townhouses, social housing, aged care. Each typology has its own challenges, its own communities, and its own opportunity to make a real difference in how people experience home. We have written about how we approach this work, from carving voids through a Brisbane apartment building to bring daylight deep into the floor plate, to designing senior living that actually feels like somewhere you would want to be. https://www.reddogarchitects.com/news/rethinking-multi-residential-design/

The recently completed CHAC Indoor Sports Centre provides a contemporary multi-court facility for students and visitors to Cannon Hill Anglican College. Designed to support sport, assembly and everyday school life, the building, in conjunction with the Administration Centre, are part of the College’s overall master plan. Generous volumes, bold forms, natural light and the use of robust materials create a variety of spaces that are both practical and enduring. The bold colours reflect the College logo and act as a wayfinding tool for students, staff and visitors.
