Why use glue pockets when laminating timber? 🪵

Glue pockets help create stronger, more consistent bonds between laminations by ensuring even adhesive distribution throughout the timber. They can reduce the risk of dry joints, improve structural integrity, and help minimise movement or delamination over time. The result? A stronger, more reliable laminated product built to last.

Quality starts with the details. 👌

Before you blame the blade, check the fl**ge.

One of the biggest lessons in restoration work is that the obvious culprit isn't always the problem. A lot of saw blades get replaced when the real issue is runout in the arbor fl**ge. Even a tiny amount of movement can affect cut quality, accuracy, and finish.

When you're restoring vintage homes, precision matters. Taking a few minutes with a dial gauge can save hours of chasing problems and help deliver cleaner, straighter cuts.

Why do we cut good timber? Here's why.

It might look wasteful, but end docking removes grit, dirt, stones, splits, and damaged timber that can destroy profile knives and cause costly downtime. It also improves machining quality and helps ensure a consistent finished product.

A small cut at the start can save a lot of money further down the line.

For those wondering why modern sawmills don’t cut true inch timber anymore — here’s the reality from someone who’s spent decades in the industry.

Over the years I’ve watched timber sizing shrink while prices continue to rise. What was once a true inch is now often undersized, and that creates real problems when reproducing heritage mouldings and restoring older homes properly.

Traditional mouldings were designed around full inch material, and when the timber is smaller, the proportions and profiles just aren’t the same.

That’s why in my workshop, I still mill to true inch sizes the old-fashioned way — because accuracy matters when restoring heritage work and matching original craftsmanship.

If you appreciate traditional timber work and authentic reproductions, follow along for more behind-the-scenes milling and heritage restoration content.
