Many clients come to us with a list of rooms they believe a successful home should include.

But often, beneath the wishlist is a deeper conversation waiting to happen.

Through our Holistic Home Report, we guide clients through a reflective pre-design process focused not only on what they want to build, but how they want to live.

For this family, the process revealed something unexpected.

After years of prioritising work and productivity, they realised their vision for home had quietly shifted toward connection, rest and shared experiences.

The design brief transformed alongside it.

Spaces for retreat became spaces for togetherness.

A large office became a games room.

Additional rooms gave way to shared family zones, an outdoor kitchen and a pool house designed for long afternoons spent together.

The result wasn’t simply a beautiful home.

It was a home aligned with the life they wanted to create.
This is why thoughtful pre-design planning matters.

This beautiful family home faced the challenge of striking a balance between its expansive North-facing frontage and the need for privacy, especially with three young children playing in the yard. To address this challenge, we carefully rotated the home towards the northeast, optimizing the design into three distinct volumes: the Entertaining wing (dedicated to public areas), the Bridge (housing the Master and Guest), and the Kids wing.

Our primary objective was to minimise wasteful hallway space while maximizing the breathtaking view to the East and capturing the invigorating morning sun.

Simultaneously, we focused on shielding the interior from the intense Western heat during the scorching Summer months. To ensure the utmost safety of the children, we deliberately separated the car and utility area from the North-facing entertaining space.

We incorporated perforated brick walls as a design element to this mid-century modern inspired home that not only adds aesthetic appeal but also acts as screens, filtering the natural light and street views. This thoughtful design choice enhances both the privacy and the visual experience within the home, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and beauty.

Our clients are after someone who can help them make the right decisions with their home, their budget and the way they want to live.

Creating or transforming a home is deeply personal, as well as a significant investment. For many people, it can feel overwhelming not knowing where to start.

At Cooper & Blake Architecture we believe good architecture should do more than look beautiful. It should support your life, respond to your site, feel good to live in and make sense financially.

Our role is to help bring calm and direction to the process, so every decision has purpose and every step moves you closer to a home that truly fits.

The right outcome rarely starts with plans.
It starts with asking the right questions.

Some homes do not need reinvention, they need better understanding.

We often hear the words renovation and restoration used interchangeably, but the mindset behind each is very different.

A renovation asks, how can we update this home?
A restoration asks, what is worth keeping, and how can we build upon it?

Across Victoria, many mid-century and period homes already hold qualities difficult to replicate today.

Thoughtful proportions, natural light, material warmth and a deep connection to site.

Too often their character is erased in pursuit of something newer.

We believe the best outcomes often come from enhancing performance, improving liveability and allowing a home to evolve without losing what made it meaningful in the first place.

Not frozen in time. Instead carried forward with care.

Our latest journal article explores the subtle difference between renovation and restoration, and why it matters more than many realise.

Recently completed Holistic Home Report for ‘Parea House’.

After extensive exploration to understand the clients brief, project expectations and lifestyle needs for their home, we had the beginning of a concept.

With a fondness for the family holiday in Greece and the need to create a home that felt welcoming, calm and for bringing people together led to this project embodying ‘Parea’.

Parea is a Greek word that defines a group of close friends who gather to share experiences and ideas. It represents a way of life centred on companionship and the enjoyment of life’s daily moments.

Excerpt from last month’s newsletter, which is released the last Friday of each month.

I am going to dive right in with a question for you.
When you think about your home, what comes to mind first?

Is it the size of the room, the finishes, the facade?

Or is it something less tangible. The way morning light moves across the floor. The comfort of a protected courtyard. The calm that settles in when space simple works the way it should?

Articles can be found on our website and you can subscribe to my monthly Architect Journal via the website as well 🤎💫

The softness of morning light across the kitchen bench. The quiet comfort of a sheltered courtyard on a warm afternoon. The sense of calm that arrives when a space simply works, intuitively and effortlessly.

Architecture shapes these experiences long before we consciously register them. It influences how we move, how we gather, how we rest and how we connect. If a home is where life unfolds, then the way it feels matters as much as the way it looks.

At Cooper & Blake, we believe architecture should make you feel something. Not through spectacle, but through subtlety. Not through excess, but through intention.

How has your home supported you over the holiday break?

Between increased time within your own home, to hosting family and friends, all whilst coping with weather extremes. It’s a demanding time and you’re more likely to notice what’s not working. Whether it’s the energy efficiency, function, flow or just how you feel in the space.

This is the time I get an influx of inquiries for clients looking for either a renovation or to build their new dream home.

Taking limited enquires now for projects in 2026 ✨

Featuring our Monday in the Hamptons project, designed for a retired couple to live comfortably most of the year but have a home that supports extended family to visit and enjoy a coastal private oasis.

Often I have clients come to me wanting drawings of a design they already *think* they want.

This was one of the main drivers for creating a clear process for clients to let go of the floorplan and allow for a freer yet more insightful investigative process to uncover what exactly they need.

Taking the time to reflect on how you live, how you want feel and how your home can support you leads to a floorpan that functions, flows and feels better.

If you’re thinking about a new home, start with a conversation with us to gain clarity and confidence on where to go next.
