1950s idea of lawnmowers to come

The future of lawn-mowing, as envisaged in October 1957, was all about Jetson-style, acrylic bubbled and air-conditioned vehicles that would – surely, they thought – be the way people in the 21st Century would leisurely and comfortably tend to their gardens.

The particular lawnmower pictured had a 1.5 metre (5 foot) diameter plastic sphere that encapsulated the operator who sat on an air-foam cushioned seat. It had its own electric generating system for operating running lights, a radio telephone, air conditioning and even a drink cooler.

Apparently it could not just mow the lawn, but w**d it, feed it, seed it, spray for insects, plow snow, and haul tools around. It was also billed as a reasonably good golf cart too.

Got a second? I want to show you something.

This is w**d matting that I pulled out of a garden bed today. Notice how it's totally full of w**ds and really made absolutely no difference? Yeah.

Please dont use w**d matting. It doesn't work. It puts plastic particles into the soil. It traps heat and kills microbes you want. And insects. And worms. It also makes life hard for your gardener.

It's a waste of money and serves no purpose.
