Steven Pashley‎ sent me this photo a few years ago now; "Remember Noddy and Big Ears? When my wife and I met nearly 40 years ago we realised that she had the Noddy doll, and I had the matching Big Ears doll. Uncanny coincidene."
Thanks Steven, poor old Noddy and Big Ears. Apparently very un-PC since the 60s. First the golliwogs were changed into goblins, then all references to Noddy and Big Ears snuggling up in the same bed were removed, while Noddy himself was no longer allowed to feel "q***r". Even PC Plod was not PC enough and had to stop being so aggressive. Crazy I know but nothing escapes the PC police!
Sales of the Noddy books appear unaffected by all the controversy though. A few years ago Trocadero Publishing purchased the copyright to the works of Enid Blyton (who died in 1968), for £13 million. Her books continue to sell more than 8 million copies a year; Noddy alone has accounted for more than 100 million sales since his first appearance in 1949.

About 10 years ago while building a house I would end up with a bit of leftover concrete from each row of blocks. Rather than waste it, I bought some little gnome moulds and experimented. The first gnomes were given away to family and friends and were well received.

I got more moulds and started experimenting with the casting, the mix and the different paints to see which ones lasted out in the weather. I have what I call ‘Gnome Test Dummies’ strewn throughout my yard in various states of undress!

Once perfected, I started selling the gnomes online and expanded the range of moulds. I try to find ones that are a little different, and that are not too big to mail. Even so, I can only post within Australia and some of the largest ones are only suitable for mailing within the Eastern states because of the weight of mailing concrete.

The gnomes are fairly labour-intensive with the setup, casting, sanding, cleaning etc. But then they come indoors to be painted. It is very relaxing painting gnomes while watching a movie. The whole process usually takes about 3 or 4 weeks and is all done by hand.
