🚨 QLD Smoke Alarm Laws – Are You Ready for 2027?

By 1 January 2027, all private homes, townhouses and units in Queensland must have:

✔ Photoelectric smoke alarms

✔ Interconnected alarms (if one sounds, they all sound)

✔ Installed in every bedroom

✔ Installed in hallways connecting bedrooms

✔ Installed on every level of the home

✔ Compliant with AS 3786-2014

They must be either:

• Hardwired (240V) with backup battery

OR

• 10-year non-removable battery type

If your alarms are older, not interconnected, or over 10 years old — they will need upgrading.

⚠ Landlords must ensure compliance before new or renewed leases.

⚠ Sellers must provide a Form 24 Safety Certificate.

1. Test Your Safety Switches (RCDs)
Your safety switches are your home’s first line of defence against electrocution. Press the TEST button on each RCD in your switchboard - the power should disconnect immediately.
If it does not, contact a licensed electrician before storm season arrives.

2. Secure Outdoor Power Points & Electrical Equipment
Ensure all outdoor sockets, pool pumps, BBQ areas, and garden lighting are properly weatherproofed.
Replace any cracked or damaged fittings - rain and electricity don’t mix, especially during heavy storms.

3. Plan for Back-Up Power
Summer storms often bring unexpected blackouts.
