Grout is the cement that fills the gaps between your ceramic tiles. It is quite often found in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways of commercial properties. Grout is an important part of flooring as not only does it keep tiles in place, it also seals the flooring to avoid leakage.
When areas of shower grout look moldy, yellow and discolored then this is an indication that the rest of the grout is also in poor condition.
Over time water will make its way through the weakened grout and start accumulating in your walls. Eventually mold and mildew can grow in your walls and then can start eating into your wall joists and can cause serious problems. Additionally the moldy walls can attract ants and termites into your home.
The best way to prevent your shower from failing and causing excess damage to your home is to regrout your shower.
Smart move to regrout before larger damage is done. Grout that's crumbling and mildew-stained is more than unattractive, it's mechanically unsound and will only continue to crumble unless it's removed and replaced.
