Coming into winter is an exciting time to plant new roses. Before you do that it is best to prepare the soil first.
The soil needs to have a pH level of 6.5 -7.0.
Using a pH tester, (you can buy one from your local nursery or hardware store), follow the instructions on the box to test the level.
If it is above 6.5 you can lower it by adding some sulphur. To raise it add some lime.

When pruning old flowers it is important to keep your tools sanitary. Once a bush is pruned just give your tool a quick spray of a metho/water mix 80:20 or use an isopropyl alcohol spray. This prevents any diseases spreading to a new bush.

Don’t be shy with your rose blooms. Pick them and put them in vases around the house. Not only are they pretty, some also have a beautiful fragrance. Roses love having their blooms picked as it encourages more growth.

Using a mulch around the roses can protect them from not only being choked out by weeds, but also from water loss.
Spread the mulch about 50mm thick around the base of the rose, leaving a few centimetres gap to prevent collar rot.
