Today we are starting our Patch to Plate program at Woodlands House Ocean Grove. Looking forward to 2 terms of fun as we explore food growing, compost, worms and more then cook some delicious food from what we've grown. Hands on sensory based learning at its best!

Sprouting broccoli, the gift that just keeps on giving. Pictured here are green and purple varieties. Sprouting broccoli will develop a small initial head. After this first harvest it will produce months of these smaller delicious side shoots. Its a great plant for a children's veggie patch as they can get months of harvesting from the one plant.

Too many damaged or fallen apples? We've been minimising wasted apples by making apple cider vinegar. It's easy and fun. We make a food grade batch in large jars for consuming and another batch in a big plastic bucket that we only use for cleaning. Lots of great recipes out there!

With apples ripening and still some hot days, it's a great chance to make dried apple pieces. My children love these as a lunch box treat. Why not go low tech and use the power of the sun? We use an apple corer/ hand slinky machine to core and cut the apples- leave the skins on. Each apple is then cut in half, the pieces dipped in a mix of lemon juice and water. Then it's onto some clean repurchased flyscreens. Pop another screen on top and put the whole lot on a metal roof. On a hot 35 degree plus day they will be ready by the end of the day. Cooler weather will need multiple days.

Sometimes just give it a go! This is not how your "supposed" to garden. All of these veggies were planted directly into the ground with only narrow rows dug amongst the weeds. The tomatoes and pumpkins all grew as self seeded plants from compost and were then moved to this part of the garden. It's thriving, healthy plants, blue banded bees, fairy wrens and many other beneficial insects and birds have been visiting to lend a helping hand. It won't always work, but sometimes it might!
