The Gardener’s Garden

…is all too easily “the plumber’s tap”. Recently I got to spend some much-needed time on mine. Of course there’s always more to do! And we decided to stay here for the foreseeable future, so let me know if you need help with garden projects or maintenance in the area around Castlemaine. (Call Richard on 0418 299920.)

What does a gardener do all day?

This is something I only ever hope to hear before an engagement rather than after it! But it’s a fair and inevitable question, so to give you some idea… This past week, amongst other things, I:
• Cleared a whole load of w**ds which the rain has encouraged
• Pruned a variety of fruit trees
• Shored up a crumbling driveway
• Sawed and split logs for the fire
• Dug out the “wrong” plants so the “right” plants could grow
• …and even fixed a patio door

Next week I am fully booked with:
• Making a garden presentable for a house sale
• Building box beds and planting fruit trees in them
• More garden “rediscovery”
• …and of course, a whole lot more w**ding and clearing

So if you lack the health/time/tools/knowledge/whatever to do it yourself, ask me anything! It’s what everyone else does…

This raised rabbit-proof rose bed went into such a stony, uneven setting that I had to build the whole thing upside down and then drop it into place. Amongst all the straightforward garden maintenance and minor landscaping, I take on the odd jobs with no obvious solution. Contact me with your challenge! 0418-299920.

So whaddya gonna do - embrace your acacia or throttle your wattle?
At this time of year, Australians everywhere rise stiffly to their feet and salute their national plant as it bursts into glorious bloom*. The acacia family clothes our country in yellow and we all go ahhh. As we should. This overlooks a couple of inconvenient truths however:
1. Wattles don't live that long, die ugly and make useless firewood.
2. Some people loved some wattles* so much they planted a minor NSW variant all over Melbourne... whence it became an invasive w**d across Victoria.
You ask me where I stand on this. Well, I'm just a gardener, so the question goes to you: do you want me to clear it, or clear around it?

Where does "tidying up" stop and "landscaping" start?
First, thanks to all of you who have responded in some way to my introductory post. A number of you have asked me questions with "it depends"-type answers, including variations on "a bit of landscaping". So here's the kind of thing I do. Not Versailles! - but converting a non-descript point in a garden (a vague gap in the bushes) into something useful and presentable (a set of steps down a bank). I hope that helps set the level, and look forward to hearing more from (more of) you soon.

"I love my garden but..."

How often have you heard (or said) that? People get older, or lose their health, or find themselves pressed for time... and their garden is the casualty. Then they have to watch it get more bedraggled every day.

That's why I've set up Herbarium - specifically to help people enjoy their gardens despite those kinds of limitations. And the Garden Services in question are things that have given me satisfaction for many years:

- Clearing, felling, pruning, and generally tidying the place up on a large scale (I'm a tidy person!)
- Weeding, mowing, planting and you guessed it, generally tidying the place up on a small scale
- Minor landscaping - building beds, paths, sleeper walls etc, to make the place more accessible, more productive, nicer to look at and, of course, tidier...

I'll be posting examples of my work and some ideas for minor projects we might do together.
