Uncut grass keeps the soil at 19.5°C
A grass cut at a level of 10 cm maintains the soil temperature at 24.5°C
Bare soil in the middle of summer rises to more than 40°C

That is why it is important to make this knowledge visible.

I do see a lot of bad pruning out there.

WHEN IS YOUR GARLIC READY TO HARVEST?

It's exciting when you see others posting their harvested garlic photos on Facebook and you wonder if you should be harvesting your own garlic - but are not quite sure if they are ready.

Firstly I think it's worth remembering that there are many types of garlic (11 garlic groups in total) and they are categorised into Extra Early, Early, Mid and Late season harvesting groups. This means there can be as much as 8-10 weeks difference between the earliest harvesting garlic and the latest harvesting ones.

So if you haven't marked your garlic with signs to remind you of the garlic group, cultivar and harvesting timing - then perhaps just simplifying it back to SOFTNECK OR HARDNECK is easier for many.

**** SOFTNECK are harvested when they have died back to just 6 remaining green leaves.

**** HARDNECK are harvested when they have died back to just 4.5 remaining green leaves.

So don't feel pressured to harvest your garlic just because everyone else is. Your garlic will tell you when it is ready to harvest by the number of remaining green leaves - and all you really need to remember is whether they are a softneck or hardneck.

Recently Organic Gardener received an email from Wendy with some pictures asking what was causing the damage to her vegetables and other plants in her garden. This letter was passed on to me and after a bit of research I realised I was looking at the effects of one of the herbicides in the Picloram,...
