Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera Japonica) Removal
This large honey suckle removal was an interesting task to undertake with several important and vulnerable aspects to consider.
The invasion was largely condensed in an area that was being flooded by a culvert that directed all the water run-off from the nearby escarpments into the property, and further on from the culvert was the properties natural dam.
There was also horticultural tarp put in place 10+ years ago that was absolutely suffocating the soil. It had some benefit of forcing most of the honey suckle runners to establish above it, however there were thick parent roots that had pushed their way through the tarp.
The removal was done without any use of poisons and knowing the nature of a w**d so determined and reactive the task required a multifaceted approach.
We designed and provided the client with a ‘Japanese Honeysuckle Removal & Restoration Plan’
Involving a staged management approach:
Stage 1: Initial Honey Suckle Removal
Stage 2 & 3: W**d Mat removal and Secondary Honey suckle removal
Stage 4: Soil cultivation & Preparation
Stage 5: Restoration Planting
Stage 6: Ongoing Monitoring
Stages 1-3 Have been completed as seen in the photographs and an organic layer placed on top of the flooded area to begin the aid in soil restorations.
The client is making steps to
-restore the soil structure,
-create a more permeable soil,
-improve the soil aeration, and
- create a soil environment that will support the planting of natives that will contribute to improving the soil and its macro/microbial activity, ultimately aiding in supressing the honey suckle growth.
(They have already begun sourcing plants to add to the space!)
It will need continual attention to continually remove honey suckle as it fights back to survive... however there is now a chance for a positive outcome since we have begun preparing the space for a more habitable environment.
It was a big job, covered head to toe in mud but a job that was absolutely satisfying to complete!
If you're needing help across your garden space, get in touch - we'd love to help 😄
