Town and Country Gardens

Town and Country Gardens Peta Trahar's garden Woodgreen is beautiful in all seasons and it together with the nursery are open by appointment. Please call or FB me. Many are rare.

The Nursery is open by appointment. Garden and horticultural groups are welcome. Peta’s interest has always been in the more interesting and unusual plant species, including those with variegated foliage. The Woodgreen garden is a product of her collecting since establishing a first garden in the 1970’s. It is now the source of the plants in the nursery. The range offered includes perennials, shrubs and bulbs among others. Occasionally Peta takes her plants to selected festivals.

Early Winter colour. Variegated Holly trimmed as a topiary, Luculia and Snowflakes. Our weather has been relatively mild. Lots to do in the garden including quite a bit of pruning. Ooh, I can see a wattlebird outside in the Camellia. Anyhow, bye for now. Stay well.

So, on Wednesday we had a little dinner party. Our guest loves the fragrance of these Jonquils. So do I. Apparently many find the smell too strong. I like to cook, but dinner parties make me a bit nervous. Here's what we had. A glass or 2 of nice Champagne with smoked salmon on little bickies. My special chicken and mushroom pie, (a Tasmanian recipe) with a fresh salad.... all home grown. Next, the most decadent, rich, chocolate tart with ice-cream and raspberries. I felt quite proud. We sat by the fire and talked until nearly midnight.

Last Saturday our Bilpin Garden Club enjoyed our Soup Day indoors at the Kurrajong Heights Bowling Club. It was fun. Trivia, lunch, an excellent speaker then a plant/garden item swap. I missed out on this rather beautiful Pelargonium. Isn't the leaf unusual! I wonder what the flower will be like? I begged a cutting from the gardener who secured it. Watch this space!

Camellia japonica 'Moshio'. This is an oldie and an early, generous bloomer. I think this very ancient cultivar was once called 'Flame'. We admire it outside the office window where it's reached tree-like proportions.

I just have to have colour in the garden. Near the front door are these pots of little pretties including violas and sweet Alice. The thing is to keep deadheading them.

A gorgeous Salvia. I won't cut it back quite yet. Oops, actually I think that it's actually a Plectranthus.

Jill very kindly sent me an image of this year's Sulman Art competition winning painting of a beautiful greyhound. The painter apparently has 7 rescue greyhounds. Good on her. I couldn't resist adding this photo of William in our flowery chair. How did he ever fit???? I must get into Sydney to the Art Gallery to see all the winning paintings including the Archibald winner. Thank you, Jill.

I'm always apologizing for being slow with my posts but believe me, it has been busy. Today is quite cloudy and mild so Mr P and I have done some teamwork gardening. He on the whipper snipper, me picking up piles of stuff, mainly Plumbago and Erigeron. Both are rather thuggy and need tidying up now. You can see that we still have some late Autumn colour thanks to our Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleers'. Otherwise, most of the garden is a bit colourless.

This photo was taken a couple of mornings ago when it was very misty. I believe that fog was so thick down in Sydney that the airport was closed. It's as if someone has blown a whistle. Autumn's over! Winter now. The deciduous trees are becoming skeletal, allowing the sun to shine through. I don't mind. It means that we can slow down a bit and read lots. I can make soup! Today I spent a couple of hours trimming back the foliage of our bearded Iris. It looked icky.....maybe all the rain. Tomorrow I'll yank out Crocosmia foliage. It looks brown and messy too. Next? Next? Next? 😊
