Public spaces are becoming more complex as the years go on. As seasoned architects, not only must we consider the layout of a community, but everything that its members will need to thrive.

Gandhi Foundation Community Hall - Fiji is an outstanding project representing our understanding of the community it serves. The client wanted to create a dedicated space to facilitate education and community for people who follow Gandhi Philosophy.

The Gandhi foundation building in India comes from the Colonial or traditional Indian architecture structure; hence this Gandhi foundation building in Fiji warranted a Fijian fusion. The façade is inspired by the local leaves mat’s weave pattern to bring local culture to the design. The entrance door resembles the starting of a knot of the weave pattern, with three scaled Gandhi walking sculptures towards the entrance door. To blend with digital technology there is a dedicated computer kiosk and Think Tank Space - this is where local community members bring their big ideas into life.

Muilti-purpose buildings can satisfy many different needs of the community, but designing these spaces can be quite tricky and takes a lot of thought from various stakeholders. How can we design a functional space yet unique and can truly represent the client's visions? This is the key question we need to tackle with the Water PNG Limited (WPNGL) multi-use building complex project.

Water PNG Limited (WPNGL), the water supply and sewerage authority in Papua New Guinea, required a modern multifaceted mixed-used building with specific functional areas. After a lengthy period of consultation with various bodies and analysis of the current spaces, we have formulated a design extending beyond a regular office setting, with a food court, training areas, social spaces and function rooms catering for different purposes.

With water - WPNGL's main selling point - at the central element in our design, we have created a facade with floating bubbles as a focal point throughout the building walls. To add more visual interest, we added hexagonal windows resembling ice water. To acknowledge the importance of our local community, we also featured high-quality indigenous aesthetics in the entranceways and the interior spaces.

For large-scale buildings like airports, it is much more complex to implement sustainability than creating a green office space or home. Factors like runway constraints, an urban environment, and millions of annual visitors make airport sustainability no easy feat.

Airport sustainability combines economic, environmental, and social considerations into planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance. This is no easy-task for Airports Fiji Ltd, however with a wealth of sustainable design practices on hand, our team of architects at DesignLife have successfully helped the company in designing and constructing the new airport terminal - Airport Savusavu.

Savusavu Airport endeavours to give passenger a "green" island feel, therefore we have utilised special veneer designs and taken into great consideration factors such as noise pollution, land utilisation and congestion in the final proposal. Our exterior and overall landscape was designed in such a way that could enable travellers to have a peaceful journey, all the while bringing a spirit of hospitality to the community of Savusavu.

The need for student accommodation is growing more complex and demanding each year – that’s why us architects are improving the way we design student housing. Our Student Apartments project near the Education Precinct of the capital of Fiji – Laucala Bay Suva – is a notable example of our initiatives.

In contrary to the small and limited designs of dormitories, our idea is to give students the feeling of “home away from home” while striking a perfect balance between privacy and community. Within the building structure we have distinguished living, learning and retailing areas. We also allow spaces for sporting and other community events on-site so students can freely mingle, relax and study. The exterior of the apartment complex is adorned with palm trees, pools and plenty of nature to imitate a “semi-resort” vibe.

The cohesive feel of the space along with plenty of on-site amenities mirror the community’s unique cultures, and serve as one of the key selling points for students when choosing their accommodation here.

An often overlooked aspect of designs is one concerning early childhood education. The design of a child's learning environment is so crucial to his or her development, that even architects, designers and well-known psychologists in the field such as Isamu Noguchi or Maria Montessori recognise and put heavy emphasis on.

In contemporary kindergarten design, distinctive colors and playful flourishes proliferate. Spaces are brightly lit, often with skylights or glass curtain walls. Our project for Shri Sathya Sai School in Lautoka, Fiji took up a similar concept.

Our kindergarten design contains primary colour like red, blue and yellow and primary shapes like square, triangle and circle in the overall structure. The surrounding environment was created to allow an abundance of natural lights and sightlines coming through the buildings. This unique environment allow parents and teachers to have proper oversight over the kids and enable their children to truly open up and expand their creativity, with tons of spaces to enjoy their daily activities.

Our Hindu Temple project in Fiji is a prime example of our efforts. Understanding our client's value and faith in Lord Shiva - the principal deity of Hinduism, we have constructed an intricate structure. This design's focal point was the facade, which resembles that of Linga - an elliptical egg-shaped form representing Shiva - and having such unique design which enables the sun rays to shine through, making it a beautiful work of art.

Throughout the temple we have also ensured to strictly follow the rules of Vaastu to ensure a positive flow of energy through the extern space, creating peace of mind to visitors and harmony to the land and making it the ideal destination for devotees and the community to pay a visit, pray and meet up for small cultural events.
