Fodder plant of the week. Old man Saltbush. 4 each. 20 plants for $50

Old Man Saltbush is a fast-growing shrub commonly used today as a livestock grazing plant. However, both the seeds and leaves are viable bush tucker, with the leaves salty in flavour and rich in protein, antioxidants and minerals. This species occurs naturally in WA, SA, NT, VIC, NSW and QLD

Though Saltbush tolerates drought, salinity and sandy soil in the wild, young plants will struggle to establish in conditions that are too dry and barren. Choose a rich and loamy, but free-draining soil, and water well in the weeks after first planting. Saltbush is suitable for full sun and part shade, but protect from hard frosts. Leaves are grey-green, small (2-3cm) and irregularly shaped, but will grow larger and more vegetable-like in hothouse conditions.

This plant is a woody shrub that can reach up to 3m in height. It may be grown in the ground or kept smaller in pots, if harvested frequently. With regular pruning, it makes a great gap filler or edible hedge.

The Farm Tree Nursery is pleased to present our tree of the week! Italian Stone pine (Pinus Pinea) the source of pine nuts! $6 each or three for $15

Italian Stone pine / Pine nut (Pinus pinea)

A dense and fast-growing young tree starting off conical with grey green juvenile needles and later developing a characteristic flattened crown on a straight orange-brown trunk. Foliage grows in clumps high up in the branches creating the shape of an umbrella. For this reason it is also known as the umbrella pine.
The seeds are a delicacy used in most Mediterranean cooking since Roman times. Each cone can contain around 50 nuts.
Make an excellent specimen for larger gardens and park lands. Trees can live up to 300 years or more.
A hardy Mediterranean pine that requires little maintenance. Will grow well in a range of soils though prefers sandy to rocky soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5-7.5). This tree is very hardy and can tolerate frost and dry heat/drought well. It is also tolerant of salt near the coast.
The tree is often used as a bonsai specimen.

Fodder Tree of the Week
European Oak
Quercus Robur

Quercus robur is a slow growing deciduous tree native to England and parts of Europe. It is deciduous and is a common farm and garden tree in southern and eastern Australia. It has traditionally been grown for its highly prized timber and stock shelter and fodder values.

English oak can adapt to a wide variety of soils from sandy through clay, the most important feactor being drainage, it is advised to spread adequate gypsum in heavier clay soils.

Timber has been used for a wide variety of purposes, from building and construction, through furniture and fenceposts. It is highly durable and is prized for its workability.

The leaves and acorns are both used as fodder, Pigs, goats and sheep all love the acorns, cattle and horses will browse on the leaves, It is an excellent supplemental fodder for most ruminants.

Osage orange
Maclura Pomiflera

The Osage Orange is a small deciduous tree which is endemic to the the south central parts of North America, It is both drought and frost hardy, and once established can withstand both heavy frosts and drought! It grows to 12 m, with a canopy spreading between 7-8 m,, it also responds well to hedge pruning, it was traditionally used as a stock enclosure hedge.
Osage orange is a unique fodder tree in that although stock will happily eat both foliage and fruit, they will not browse on bark as the bark is to bitter for palatability, making it a brilliant east/west windbreak understory or stock enclosure tree. It is an excellent supplemental fodder tree for cattle, goats, sheep and other ruminants
Timber from the Osage Orange has been traditionally used in bow making due to its extreme flexibility, and is currently prized by musical instrument makers.

Sweet Chestnut
Castanea Sativa

Chestnuts are fast growing long lived large deciduous trees growing to 30 m tall by 20 m wide. The name Chestnut also refers to the abundant crops of edible nuts during Autumn.

Chestnuts are frost hardy to -40 and can withstand drought once established due to their deep tap roots.
They are self pollinators with male and female flowers on the same tree.
Seedlings chestnuts should start cropping after 4 years.
