Our Story
Baled on our family property at Hernani NSW, this native grass ‘Poa Tussock’ grows in abundance in naturally fertile, high rainfall and high altitude areas. Many farmers see this tussock grass as an interference to their improved pastures which grow after paddocks are sprayed out with chemical and then intensely grazed and fertilised. We wanted to utilise this native gra

ss, that was growing naturally in our environment rather than just spray it out, so we began to slash it and mulch it back into our soil. I was supplying old silage bales and damaged hay to a local gardener ‘Rosemary’ for mulch for a few years, and was getting many complaints about the grass that was growing up in her vegetable garden. This gave me the idea to try baling the Poa Tussock. I baled up some tussock during winter when there was no seed head and we started to test it on our own and Rosemary’s garden. The mulch was easy to handle, looked good and broke down slowly. Rosemary has been impressed with the product and subsequently now is buying up to 50 bales each year to mulch her gardens and is an advocate for MAD native mulch. I have been supplying MAD native mulch now for three years with great feedback, and as a result our clientele base is steadily growing. We are supplying gardeners, hobby farmers, market gardeners and garlic farmers in our area and hoping to distribute more of this great native product to more gardens in the region. Currently we have available large round bales (4’x4’4”) weighing approximately 300kg+/- at $60 + GST each (discount for large orders). Small bales will also be available at $12 each. Pick up available at Hernani or delivery can be arranged at an additional cost.
