Mitsui Garden Hotel Jingu-Gaien Tokyo by Nikken Sekkei Architects.

What an understated building with subtle curves within the wooden box, I particularly enjoyed the termination of the grid at the roof level.

Garden of Fine Arts Kyoto by Tadao Ando.

Sadly, whilst a beautiful insertion into an urban environment. I found this a bit disappointing. It reminds me of the saying "never meet your heros".
This was one of the buildings that I studied in university and was profoundly disappointed with what I saw.
I remember books and publications going into details of the project and, of course, the carefully curated photography. Do I still feel this way? No, I don't, but I can't shake the feeling at the time.

Yumebutai by Tadao Ando.

100 garden beds cascading down the hill.
In winter everything greys off. In summer, it is a wonderful shade of green and flowers.
Huge crazy expanse of escher like stairs around each garden bed.

It is hard to believe, but over one million scallop shells were hand laid into the concrete base of approximately 10,000 m2 of water features, fountains, and waterfalls.

Awaji Yumebutai by Tadao Ando.

This place is quite surreal.

Koshino House (KH Gallery) by Tadao Ando. Koshino House was built in 1984. I have to admit the design and detailing is eye wateringly beautiful, particularly considering it is now 40 years old.

Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum by Tadao Ando.

Sayama pond is Japan’s oldest artificial reservoir that was created in 616 during the Asuka period. The reservoir has 1,400 year history.

The museum is quite monumental in size, like most of Tadao's projects. I have a love-hate relationship with his work.
