Pruning floribundas roses
Principals are the same as standard roses but remove less length from each branch. Aim to remove approx. 1/3 of overall height. Again aim for open vase shape.

Pruning standard roses
1. On each strongly growing branch identify an outward facing bud. Don't be afraid to prune a good length off.
2. Cut the stem just above the bud taking care not to damage the bud
3. Remove any rootstock shoots at ground level (thinner and much longer spikes than main shoot)
4. Remove any thin weak shoots from inside the bush, aim for an open vase shape

Pruning lavender - remove flowering stems (approx.one third of plant height) to maintain rounded shape. Be careful to retain some green leaves and do not cut back into old wood.

FIRE SAFETY
-PREPARE YOUR GARDEN-

Now is the time to think about tidying up your garden
• Remove rubbish heaps, woodpiles and clippings/prunings from close to your house
• Prune lower branches of trees
• Rake up bark and leaves
• Clear roofs and gutters of leaves.

Look for fire retarding/low flammability plants when planting close to the house.

THE EDIBLE GARDEN - Tomatoes
To encourage the growth of large juicy fruits
• When plants are small remove the small branches that form where the leaf meets the main stem
• Apply half-strength liquid fertiliser (eg seaweed or fish-based) until first fruits have formed, then apply full strength every 2 weeks.

Saving seed
-Squeeze out seed and juice into little dishes, allow to ferment for a few days then rinse off (tea strainer works well).
-Place seeds on labeled paper towel and when dry store for next year!

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS
Many spring/summer flowering plants (roses, diosma) benefit from a light prune to encourage second flush of flowers.

Now is the time to divide overgrown bulbs. Either replant now or for daffodils, tulips and crocuses dry the bulbs and store in cool place until planting in autumn.
