Every property in the rural areas around Darwin and Katherine will be inspected during the next few weeks.

We’ve now completed the first round of firebreak inspections.

We looked at 6,983 blocks in the Top End and Katherine areas, and found 855 blocks - that’s 12.2% that did not have satisfactory firebreaks.

Compliance rates are improving slightly each year, but we won’t be happy until every landowner has a good perimeter firebreak installed by the end of May each year.

We are writing to all of the non-compliant landowners offering them one last chance to install their firebreaks. Landowners who do not take this opportunity will be fined, and may be fined multiple times until their firebreaks are installed.
