Gibbsy's Garden

Gibbsy's Garden Follow us on our food gardening adventures! We live in Victoria near Geelong, Australia and have been establishing our garden for the past 5 years.

Going from knowing very little to now knowing a little bit, we have managed to grow some amazing crops over the years with little effort. As our family has grown the importance of fresh food has become even higher, as too has the need to make the garden a simple, practical and fun experience. Most of our food is grown in fairly traditional raised garden beds, but we are beginning to experiment wit

h wicking beds to conserve water (and our time!)

We have a few chooks, an netted orchard and a citrus grove that is a work in progress. A simple rule at our place is that if we need to give a plant water and attention, it needs to give us some food in return - so most of the other plants at our place are native and receive no attention at all. Feel free to ask any question or provide your own gardening knowledge to this space.

How about all of the cabbage moths at the moment - they were everywhere today!! Glad I don’t have any brassicas (broccoli, kale etc) in at the moment… but I’ll still keep an eye on the other leafy veg just in case… (the caterpillars which hatch in about 5 days will quickly destroy some plants).

Fun facts (based on a quick google search) - ‘Pieris rapae’ is colloquially referred to as a cabbage moth, but is in fact a butterfly, and apparently they were accidentally introduced into Melbourne in 1929 from Europe.

This season I’ve focused on some of the basics - Beans, Snow Peas, Zucchini and Cucumbers. It’s so awesome to get this much produce from the garden every few days!

Got so hot today that the chook eggs come pre cooked!!! (This egg was laid on the chook yard ground by one of our new chooks who hasn't quite worked out where they should go - happy to report that the eggs laid by our other chooks in the insulated nesting boxes were not hard boiled!)

After a pretty long break from the Veggie garden and posting to fb, i'm finally starting to find some more time to get my hands dirty again (woo hoo!). I've been busy clearing out garden beds, adding manure and growing green manure crops to dig in prior to spring planting. Our recent olive harvest has been pretty good and we have a few large jars curing in the kitchen... the asparagus bed on the other hand (in the pics) is seriously neglected... the first signs of new asparagus spears are starting to emerge now but i'll need to spend the next couple of weekends clearing out the weeds and top-dressing with compost etc. Good times!

It's been exactly 5 years since we built the orchard structure, and it is still going strong!

Here are a couple of photos from 2012 to now - the trees have grown so much since then, and are now producing really well.

The netting, pipe and fencing are still as good as the day it was built, despite the really high winds we get out here… so I think our ‘tent inspired’ design was a good one.

If we built one again, there are a few things I’d change... but overall, it’s been such a great addition to the veg garden and sure beats netting individual trees (and makes a great chook run too).
