Not sure what type of worm farm set up to start with ? Don’t worry there are lots of options available to you depending on your space and preferred style of vermiculture set up. You can buy ready to go plastic set ups or repurpose items to make a functional little worm farm. A question I ask beginners is - do you want to collect worm tea ? If so , we will need to set you up with a farm that is raised slightly and has a tap. If you answered no - we could make a raised bed compost farm, use a plastic tub or even use an old bathtub. What features do you want your worm farm to have ?

🪱 Wait… worms have HOW many hearts ?!

They Have 5 Hearts!
Did you know red wriggler worms (Eisenia fetida) — the most common compost worms used in worm farms — actually have five hearts?
Technically, they have five pairs of aortic arches that pump blood through their bodies. Instead of one single heart like humans, these multiple “hearts” work together to circulate oxygen and nutrients while they break down your food scraps into nutrient-rich worm castings.
It’s one of the many reasons red wrigglers are such efficient composting worms and thrive in healthy worm bins.
Nature is clever 🪱🌱

Why Are Worms Climbing Out of My Worm Bin?

If your compost worms are climbing the sides or trying to escape the worm farm, it’s usually a sign that something isn’t right inside the bin. Healthy red wrigglers stay buried in moist, oxygen-rich bedding. Common reasons worms crawl out include excess moisture, acidic food (like citrus or onions), overheating, poor airflow, or overfeeding. When conditions become uncomfortable, worms instinctively move upward to escape.

To fix the problem, check moisture levels (bedding should feel like a wrung-out sponge), reduce acidic scraps, bury food properly, and add dry carbon materials like shredded cardboard. Maintaining the ideal temperature range of 15–25°C will also help keep your compost worms happy and productive.
