Edwin-Nweze Homestead Oasis

Edwin-Nweze Homestead Oasis Our oasis sits on 1/4 acre. It features native habitat, perennial plantings, natural animal enclosures, and small pond.

To raise meat responsibly, we breed quail and guinea pigs. We love exploring new skills and expanding our horizons.

I have heard tomatoes shouldn’t grow in aquaponics setups… someone forgot to inform these precious cherries with only 5 goldfish keeping it cycling currently

The kids got to pick and try their first home-grown tomatoes today. Recommended by 2/3, but I guess we can’t win them all!

It’s been a big month of sickness and tasks keeping me too busy and tired for the garden, but the garden continues to give. Love our low maintenance patch for this very reason!

Watching the guppies and snails in the tank is one of my favorite ways to relax currently, along with reading and crafting. What’s yours?

Black water tank all ready for our fish to arrive. I love the drama! With a black backing added to the glass and one centered light, I feel the natural colour of the water tinged with tannins looks less “dirty” and straight up stunning. Look forward to seeing colourful guppies bringing their character and life to the tank soon.

First meal of cuy (guinea pig meat) tonight. Just the drumsticks. Another hit, with the kids going back for seconds. 👏

Today, I processed our first 4 cuy. Exhausted and leaving the other 5 for another day. Approx 700g of mostly deboned meat (left bones in legs like chicken drumsticks).

Very happy with the effort and curious to see how it tastes 🤤

Snails and cherry shrimp added to our indoor aquarium last night. They make up our clean up crew and will breed to provide additional nutrition for our fish.

There was a bit of excitement at bedtime when I realised I forgot to turn off the hose during a water change (literally as the first drips were hitting the floor), but otherwise they’ve settled in well and we are already seeing little snail babies this morning! With one cherry shrimp already carrying around eggs, we look forward to watching the reproductive cycle of yet another tiny animal.

We’ve been throwing our used guinea pig bedding out on the gardens as mulch. Now, much to our delight, we have volunteer tomatoes popping up all over. Will be interesting to see what varieties we get from this lucky dip.
