Finally our latest model of trolley is in the system. We have all the colour versions on hand and in both 40 and 50mm wheels. Now we need to think about what one to manufacture next, we had an ide of a modular 80cm version but have not developed it too much, I wonder if there would be much interest in that however.

Apart from the new trolleys we have also started manufacturing drilling foot clamp and make/break out teeth. We have been doing this for a while exclusively for another company for 1 particular drill manufacturer but now are doing other manufacturers teeth such as Boart Longyear, Terrasonic, Comaccio & Geoprobe. Contact me if you have any enquiries šŸ™‚

The new, and unique, 40mm bearing polyurethane wheels arrived to us prior to the container departing so all the 25cm pot trolleys will be making he voyage over. We got 200+ of them in this container (Black, Grey, Anodised & Mill) so it should keep us going for a while. We should be in a position to sell in around 3 weeks now as the boat left last Friday.

In other related trolley news I have given up trying to find a retail outlet to take on out trolleys. One of the requirements is that we charge alot more for these on our online store and while I accept that we need to raise pricing so as not to step on peoples toes there was little enthusiasm from the retailers who can only double the price and I feel we would just be destroying the market we’ve spent years to nurture. In light of that I have started to look at retailers offshore and am currently testing out trolleys with some people in the US, hopefully that might pan out better. If the US market does work it would likely mean a further expansion of the range to cater to it.

Our latest project has been back in the mining field. We have an enquiry from a gold miner in north Africa that was looking to replace the Ridgid spanners with a purpose made pipe spanner to suit the NQ, HQ & PQ rods. The spanner we came up with uses curved teeth with a hefty SC50 head. We have had an internal 450kg load test and it’s all good and we’re just about to send out the 1st for field trials with a forward order for quite a few more presuming no other alterations are required. Each head gets replaced depending on the rod size so there is not adjustment required. These spanners can be custom altered to suit hydraulic outputs if needed as well. Please get in touch if you would like more info ([email protected])

I have been considering for some time to change the website over to a new theme. When I first started selling online I presumed it was only going to be good for some extra beer money but it has moved beyond that now, which is great!. However there are some details which were never really ideal from the start and I have noticed that with the way customers are using the site a change was required.

The first issue is that, surprisingly to me, that half of the visits are via mobile. The Woodmart theme we are using, to me, is great on desktop but lacks quite a bit for mobile viewing. The issue here is that there are so many options I was not really looking forward to trying to change it to suit. The mobile theme is it's own beast, even with this new theme it's not good but it should be easier for me to work on now. Thats my next job after finishing this desktop version.

I have also been of the opinion that Woodmart is simply too slow, it does not help I do half the online work in Malaysia making it slower again. I have found that a few of the services I was using were making quite a speed impact (cloudflare, WP Rocket specifically) Changing to the new theme has not really sped it up any faster than the old one once those plugins were rmoved/replaced.

So we're using Blocksy now which is a lilghter theme but it's still with Elementor with the Happy Addons. Cache is now lightspeed and we've still got the same security plugins, as you really should...

As well, we have been having issues with stock control. Until now we have been selling as single pieces & as cartons which is not an ideal way to do it and I have as it creates 2 "stocks" for the same product. More than once I have got into trouble selling parts as singles, not realising I have the cartons already spoken for. This also leads into a bigger issue of back end stock control and I will be likely changing away from Zoho to something like Inflow later on which will link between the online sales and the commercial sales which are not done through the website. This way we have 1 central location for all stock.

There are likley a few broken links, spelling mistakes šŸ˜’ and some other small issues around that I will work on. The main find product → buy part is working normally and is still within the no more than 3 clicks I have always made a rule for.

In other news, we have done the trial on the new 25cm trolley and it largely went ok, always have a small gas issue on the cores but it worked itself out during the day. We'll have these in the nextt container, likey all 4 types (mill, black and anodised) We need to hold onto some stock and wait for the next grey run before finishing the set out.

In the next update I think I'll be able to introduce our new DTH product that we have been trialling.

We’ve just started manufacturing our 6th pot trolley. The new one will be a Ƙ250 version that I have been asked about for a few times. I doubt it will be as popular as the 34cm but for customers that wanted to get a range of trolleys with the same aesthetic then it should fit in. I am looking to supply these around the start of March with the sames finishes as the other parts.

Also, one of the challenges was getting wheels that will look ok with such a small trolley. We have the 50mm one but I don’t think that will look suitable. Fortunately our Taiwanese supplier of wheels has recently come out with a 40mm bearing fitted polyurethane wheel which will be fantastic for these. The only drawback will be there is no brake version avaiable, if thats require it will have to be 50mm.

Had a custom question about the load rating on our 55cm Heavy Duty Trolley which made me recheck the rating for each wheel and found it's 50kg and not 75kg which I am pretty sure the supplier had advertised a number of years ago. Because of that I have altered the maximum rating for the pot trolley to 250kg rather then the 400kg.

The 55cm and 57cm pot trolley rubber spacers are in stock. I only bought a small number of them initally but will get more as required.

Introduced auto address complete onto the website store. We have had increasing amounts of "local pickups" because address details were not added correctly which left the local collection as the only option. This is mainly the systems fault as shopify does a much better job of the checkout. Adding this should make the checkout process much smoother.

Changed the single item layouts on the website to introduce some other parts that are frequently bought together to save people having to search for them.

Added core trays to the DTH mining section. This is a traded part we are able to get within Malaysia so it all helps.

Changed the front page to remove the spears and add DTH supply products.

As far as new products goes we are spending the toolroom time on industrial products for the time being. We are currently manufacturing a 50mm M**f Coupling in gravity as we try to move away, as much as possible, from sand casting which is pretty expensive and can be in consistent with quality.

After this we'll be moving onto the 125mm m**f coupling and, for some fun, we're going to manufacture the 10" m**f coupling in gravity too. The 10" should be a bit of a challenge as we need to separate some of the parts of the mould to allow machining in the 5 axis. When completed we'll have 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, & 10" all as gravity cast.

I have been toying with the idea of changing the AlCast site around but given all the search results would be lost it’s best just to keep it the same. The design works well enough as it is but it may need some tinkering if we get many more products. That being said I have fixed and added a few things that were on the to do list.

Fixed variation images not showing when you try to magnify on them. This looks like a theme issue, now when you click the image it will open out to a new lightbox image whcih you can also expand too. Better this way.

Added a new 55cm pot trolley rubber mat. I got asked for one of these previously and was not able to help but I figured I should complete the set out. I should say rubber is not cheap and the 55cm uses a fair bit of it. It’s also designed that if you want you can buy a 55 and 34 mat to cover the base of a 55cm trolley completely (if thats a need)

Added a little filler product in the rectangle drip tray. I got some of these as we were designing a drip tray for the 34cm trolley and have it slide in and out. It did not work out as well as I would have hoped but the tray itsef is actually quite a sturdy little thing. These are made in Malaysia too.

The big back end change is we have moved the Alcast server over to Shinjiru in Malaysia. I was having some difficulties with the server that was hosted in Australia (VentraIP) In the past they were OK but I have found the site slowing down. I have also had trouble buying from them (domains, renewals, etc) as I am frequently at the foundry in Malaysia I come up as a potential fraud case, so better I just move on.

Also fixed up the problems of the checkout quantity selector being offset, this was a simple problem in the end where the page builder Elementor was mucking up Woocommerce so I needed to remove it and use the native tools only.

Added the 2 other colour options to the square pot trolley (grey and anodised)

I have been asked a few times if we have agents or distributors in other states. The answer is unfortunately no. There is a reason for this and it’s not on our side. In the past I have tried to approach other distributors with the idea to sell that way rather than directly online and the reality is that all of them mark up goods 2-3 times. There is a perceived value of what people will spend on a trolley and for the retail outlets to obtain their margin they need to source a product that they get the maximum margin with the smallest investment.

Our trolleys are cast aluminium which are not pressure cast but gravity cast so they require a little after casting processing. We then machine them, and powder coat them.

Our wheels are from Taiwan and use a ā€œbetter than averageā€ shielded bearing. This is superior to the normal polyurethane wheels and are light years away from the black plastic caster wheel. Our margin for the 34cm wheel (the largest selling trolley) is 25% which is a decent manufacturers margin only. We wont go into tooling and such as it’s even more long winded

I have done a bit of research to back this claim up. The 2 pictures below are a trolley you can get out of Alibaba. And you can see the cost per piece (ex works) is only A$4.49 . Now you have shipping and duties (if applicable) but we have then too as we come out of Malaysia.

The next group of images are from 3 Australian online stores (1 will be familiar). All 3 are a 30cm square pot trolly using composite wood (same product as above)

Wagner A$24.95+Shipping
Botanex A$22.50+Shipping
Bunnings A$15.98 in store, I’d say plus shipping but 99% of people go to the store for the sausages at least.

So while Bunnings is the best price it’s still ~3x the purchase price. It should also be pointed out that Bunnings would either own or have exclusive manufacturing of a factory which may well result in a cheaper than A$4.49 price per unit.

In the end people can/will buy whatever product they desire of course but if you are looking to get the most value for what you are spending it would be advisable not to shop in places where the markup is multiples of the actual product cost.

I do get asked from time to time about pots that are larger than the base of the casting.

We use our own trolleys and have had a few times where this has happened (ie when you put a wine barrel on top etc.) There is also a issue if you want to use the trolleys not for pots alone and maybe for general moving or other items. We have had a number of customers place other items on as they appreciate the strength and glide the trolleys have. In all of these cases the little lugs around the edge which stop the pots falling off become a hassle as they will stick into the item placed on top.

The only option you have to avoid this has been to grind the lugs off and that’s not a great idea on your brand new purchase. We could do it in the factory and then paint over it but that would mean doubling our inventory for the lug and no-lug versions which is also not practical.

So I have gone and made up some rubber mate specifically for the 34 & 45cm pot trolley. They will be $15 each and fit just inside of the lugs, sitting around 1mm higher than the lug height. The rubber (natural rubber) will also add a large amount of grip to anything you have placed on top. I only have ~30pcs of each coming in as a trial so If these are taken up I will also look to get more along with a 55cm one. I'll receive the stock likely mid Feb.

Finally our wheels are back in stock along with the new 2" lockable version. Each trolley now comes with 2 of both so no need to worry about the trolley leaving you in the wind :) www.alcast.com.au

This is the 2nd time I have been caught running out of wheels. In the future I'll be holding wheels in our Malaysia factory and we'll send out and refill from there rather than waiting for the Taiwan supplier to manufacture and then only deliver to Australia (so this shouldn't happen again)

well this is awkward...

A few months ago we had quite a spurt of sales which was around double of our usual amount. It's kept up and now we've run out of the 2" wheels most of the trolleys use. We ordered more from the supplier in Taiwan months ago but the supply line is pretty long and we're only expecting them into our Malaysian foundry next week. We'll see if we can airfreight some over but it maybe a early Christmas break if not.

It maybe possible to source locally in Australia however the ones you can buy of the shelf in Australia are a cheaper mainland version which probably uses a cheaper bearing without a dust shield which helps to keep out water/dust/dirt so it would not be as good.

If you are after a trolley with 3" wheels we are still good for that.

Apologies to anyone looking to buy, we will bee back but it may take a few weeks.
