The Plant Mechanic

Most people know me as a diesel mechanic from Kangaroo Island, South Australia. For nearly 30 years I’ve made a living diagnosing problems, rebuilding machines, and keeping equipment running when it matters most.

Turns out that mindset works just as well with plants.

What started as a hobby has become an obsession. Over the last year I’ve immersed myself in the world of Anthuriums, Monstera, and other aroids, chasing the science behind exceptional growth instead of relying on luck. I enjoy understanding how every part of the system works. Light, VPD, nutrition, root health, water quality, environment. If something isn’t performing, I want to know why.

That’s where The Plant Mechanic comes from.

I don’t just grow plants. I troubleshoot them. I tune their environment. I test ideas, question assumptions, and keep refining the process. The goal isn’t simply to own rare plants. It’s to grow them better every season and share what actually works.

Whether you’ve just bought your first Monstera or you’ve been collecting for years, you’re welcome here. Expect practical advice, honest experiments, a few successes, a few failures, and plenty of impressive plants along the way.

Let’s build something worth growing.

This is plant growing. Sometimes you lose.

These three Monstera Albo cuttings were from one of the most stable variegated plants I’ve owned. Every leaf was consistently around a 50/50 balance, and the stem variegation was exactly what most growers spend years looking for.

On paper, they were perfect.

The cuts were clean.
The environment was controlled.
Humidity, temperature and propagation conditions were all where they should have been.

And yet… they’re dead.

About $600 worth of cuttings gone.

It’s a good reminder that plants don’t read the textbooks.

Even when you stack the odds in your favour, propagation is never guaranteed. Sometimes a cutting simply doesn’t make it.

That’s why I always say never count your plants until they’re rooted and actively growing.

Social media is full of success stories. You rarely see the failures.

Well, here’s one.

If you’re new to propagating, don’t let a loss convince you you’re doing everything wrong. Learn from it, adjust where you can, and move on to the next one.

Every experienced grower has a pile of expensive lessons behind them. This is just another one to add to mine.
