Located in the heart of Double Bay, this heritage listed residence has been brought back to life with a stunning interior renovation and two storey extension.

This project beautifully combines the old with the new whilst keeping up with the demands of a growing family. As you enter you are greeted with a beautiful, curved staircase and an abundance of natural light.

The new build aspect of the project boasts beautiful timber finishes throughout, with a large open plan kitchen, living, and dining space. Upstairs you find the master suite with vaulted timber ceilings and a stunning ensuite. Every detail and finish were carefully considered with the homeowners brief and lifestyle at the forefront of every decision.

The Horizon team particularly enjoyed delivering this project due to a close collaborative relationship with the clients on all aspects of the build.

Double Bay residence III is a fantastic example of why we love building. Being able to deliver a wonderful home for our clients’ family to enjoy.

Continuing this Paddington series.

Every detail in this kitchen was considered — the curved marble island, brass pendant, herringbone oak floor, and a built-in banquette that turns the dining corner into something you want to linger in. The marble feature wall framing the cooking zone brings a sense of drama without losing warmth.

This classic villa in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs was in dire need of a makeover, as well as making off-street parking and internal access a priority for this young family. Structural works were undertaken to install new steel beams and introduce more light into the ground floor living areas, and piling was completed to hold the house up whilst the front of the property was excavated to street level, and a new garage with a green roof was built, to allow internal access to the house. The entire home was then completely renovated to bring it into a new century, but with a timeless design!

My bedroom. North-facing, calm – a retreat, especially when there are young people gathering below…..

The cantilevered steel bay window is framed - a deep sill with a seat cushion, great spot to perch and read or just watch the trees and bees. An external blind and internal curtains give full control over light and privacy, which in the inner city, matters.

Floor-to-ceiling oak joinery runs the full wall - everything hidden, nothing cluttered. The palette is deliberately quiet.

A calm room is its own kind of luxury.

In a mid-terrace, light has to be earned. Here it falls from a skylight at the first floor, beaming down through the stair void into the living space below.

The stair wall is doing more than it looks. Rather than defaulting to angled under-stair storage, I designed it as a full-height wall - we gave up about 120mm in depth, but gained a structure that houses the kitchen pantry, fridge, storage and laundry behind flush doors.

Clean lines all the way.

I challenged myself to create dual purpose joinery – every square metre had to work hard. This sliding door cabinet is a piece I’m particularly fond of. It houses our small but growing vintage glass collection and artwork based on vinyl.

Slide it open and it reveals the TV - which on a good day is showing a Chelsea game….the chair to the right?

The rear of the living space opens fully through oversized timber-framed doors - made from and hung on pivot hinges, ideal for doors of this scale.

Whatever the weather, there is a strong connection to the outside, vastly different to the original structure (swipe to see).

We love our lounge, its 3.4 metres in length, super deep – the setting for comfy catch-ups and movie nights.

What reads as a calm wall of oak panelling is, in fact, the hardest-working joinery in the house.

Concealed within the under-stair space is the laundry, pantry, fridge, freezer and storage. With a small footprint, every surface has to perform.

To maintain the geometry of the ground floor joinery, the panels remain uninterrupted - no handles, just push-to-open doors that keep the lines clean and the architecture quietly in control.
