Another cosy project is complete - our floating bookshelves made of huon pine slabs with raw edges and natural lines. The slab sizes dictated the bookshelf's design - I love letting my available timber sizes and shapes guide the design. It's also the TV entertainment unit with a spotted gum timber panel that hides power and media equipment for the TV.

I finally found time to complete a little project for myself - my dream home office!

I didn't want to break the budget so I used construction plywood for the cabinetry, painted black for the carcasses and stained and varnished for the doors and bookshelves.

I made a floating desk out of old slabs of huon pine that I jointed to get the right width and then stained with the same merbau varnish as the cabinet. Shallow under-desk drawers hold my stationary and I got it to float by attaching to the wall and to the cabinet on the left, giving me unobstructed leg room underneath.

I made a false wall out of some walnut acoustic panelling which allowed me to mount my monitor on the wall and run all the cabling out of sight. I'll be replacing my mouse and keyboard sometime with bluetoothed ones to make the desk completely wire free :)

We all love the idea of growing our own food but have to deal with little furry thieves pinching our hard earned veggies! Two recent jobs of mine will keep those pilfering possums at bay!

In both cases, my customers wanted large (10x4m plus) enclosures with enough headroom to grow fruit trees (up to 2.7m). I used timber sleepers for the in-ground "foundations" to block any tunnellers and cheaper rough-cut treated pine for the framework. Both jobs then had a pause to allow the timber to age and the customer to paint/oil the frame before I came back to install the structural strapping and 25mm galvanised mesh. A couple of custom doors, wide enough to fit a fully laden wheelbarrow, finished each job.

Now its just up to the owners to fill it full of growbays and enjoy many years of theft free home grown veggies and fruit.

I love my books, so it was a delight when I had three requests for custom bookshelves over the last quarter. Each one was a challenging build in their own right, but I am very happy with how each came out.

The first was a full library conversion, with floor to ceiling book cases (including cornice and skirting boards) in an old house. The customer wanted the option to add a ladder and sliding rail later on, so I incorporated a structual bar almost at the top so we could attach that in future. As always, corners present challenges but I made these L shaped to maximise his bookspace. Finishing everything in classic Emerald Green to match the existing walls made it appear as if the cases had always been there.

Second one was a little simpler, but the customer wanted a dark finish. I used pine and stained it with a dark walnut finish - it took a few experiments to get the dark lustre the customer wanted, but we were both happy with the result. Like the Green Case this one was floor to ceiling so a little bit of trim finished off the job nicely.

And my third build was answered the question - how do you fit six book cases into the space for four? Well, in this case we put them on rails! These bookcase went into a space formerly occupied by built in wardrobe. I put four across the back and then two in front that slide from side to side on a rail system. It makes the maximum use of available space while adding a touch of fun.

(Video of the sliding bookcases in action in the comments, cause Facebook is terrible its job)

I've done lots of Ekodeck and I always recommend it when building a new deck - I've even used it in my own home. So I was excited to hear that Ekodeck was expanding with a new range of wall cladding!

Being zero maintenace and easy to install, its always a great option. But I wasnt sure when I would get the chance to clad a house. My opportunity came when a customer asked if I could use the cladding on a rather unusual project.

My customer loved the cladding - both its colours, its texture, its zero maintenance and how neat the trim looks. He wanted to make a series of storage benches and lockers to cover up the unsightly amenities we have outside - such as a hose and hot water heater - as well as provide some bench seating and storage. I'm always up for a challenge so was happy to design and build him his new cabinets and bench seats.

I treated it like a little house or shed build - using H3 pine to frame out the cabinets and benches and then installing the cladding as if it was on a house. As you can see, there's lots of panels and tricky angles but it was a breeze to get everything looking great.

My customer was so happy with it they asked if I could do a barn door in the same material - no problem! So now they've got the storage space they've always wanted and those ugly fixtures of everyday life are hidden away. :D

My business' slogan is "Custom Projects" so I love it when a customer challenges me. In this case they wanted a shelted seat in their front garden where they can relax in the afternoon with a book and a glass of wine. They also wanted it to break up an otherwise boring wall of the house and match the house's roof pitch.

So I came up this design which fit the bill. Constructing it was a lot of fun, as it had to both be strong and durable but portable enough that I could move it easily from my workshop to their house. I used mortise and tenon joints and prefabed hardwood lattice panels to make up the frames, which I could then assemble as required using pocket and batton screws.

It features a trunk seat that you can use for storage and lattice that will facilitate the future growth of decorative vines. After allowing it to weather for a month I stained with natural water based oils for longevity and the legs are sealed with bitumen and mounted on plastic feet and concrete pavers to prevent rot spreading up from the ground. I finally bolted it to inground concrete so it wouldn't ever move in strong winds.

Both my client and I are very happy with the project and I'm looking forward to seeing it become a featured part of her home in years to come.

Today's - a custom built garden arbour.

My customer wanted a relaxing spot to read a book and enjoy the afternoon sun. I used tenon joints and routed grooves to create super strong lattice panels, which I assembled with biscuits joints and pocket holes to hide any fixings for a seamless finish. The seat is hinged to provide convenient cushion storage. Now it just needs to be sanded, weathered and sealed.

Here's a job where the existing solution wasn't up to the task. New home owners found the old stairs pretty tricky to use. I'm not surprised - they didn't meet Australian building standards in several ways. They were too steep, the treads are too narrow, the treads were not grooved, and their footings were not level so the whole thing was crooked. It was only a matter of time before someone took a nasty tumble.

Although, legally, they don't require a handrail (being under 1m from finished ground level), for safety's sake its a good idea to always use one.

So I rebuilt the stairs so they met Australian Building Code and added a handrail for convenience and safety.

I don't just hammer bits of wood together - sometimes a customer likes to challenge me with something out of the box.

I had already done a heap of work for this customer when she asked me if I could do something about her old brick path. Large trees in the yard had lifted the bricks with their roots and her kids were tripping on them. So we needed to do something that could withstand the trees growing around them.

I removed all the bricks and used some to form the path edges. Then I compacted crushed granite down until it was good and firm. It's hard as concrete, but the tree roots wont crack or lift it like it would with concrete.

Bring your deck back from the dead with EkoDeck! I've done several deck refurbishments in the past year where I've replaced tired old timber decks with EkoDeck.

It’s a synthetic decking material that doesn’t need any treatments, staining or painting and guaranteed for 20 years.

Although its more expensive than wood, it is faster to install, so the price evens out in the end.
