🌳 Storm damage doesn't always mean removal.

This tree in Glenbrook had taken a hit. The goal was to save it β€” and that's exactly what we did.
Weight reduction, target pruning and deadwooding. The right work in the right places to relieve the stress on the structure and give the tree the best chance of recovering well.

People are often surprised that a storm affected tree can be brought back with the right intervention. Removal is always the last resort β€” not the first.

🌳 This one is still to come.

A tree in Glenbrook has come in with a significant split in the trunk. We've done the assessment, the owner has the report β€” now we're waiting on the go ahead to get started.

A trunk split like this isn't something to sit on for too long. Depending on the extent of the damage, it can compromise the structural integrity of the whole tree β€” especially heading into storm season.

Stay tuned for the after.

🌳 Not every job is just about the tree.

This one was in Katoomba. Storm damaged, and at first glance, not looking great. But the owner desperately wanted to save it β€” it had history with the family, and that matters.

So that's what we set out to do.
With careful assessment and the right cuts, we were able to repair the damage and give the tree the best chance of a full recovery.

It's still standing. πŸ’š

In nearly three decades of arboriculture, I've learned that sometimes the most important thing a tree has going for it is someone who cares enough to fight for it. That's always worth the effort.

🌳 Sometimes the decision to remove a tree isn't made all at once β€” it's made by the weather.

This Eucalyptus in Lapstone had already lost a significant part of its crown across three separate wind events. What was left was leaning over the owner's roof β€” and with bushfire season in mind, that was a real concern.

At that point, a partial trim wasn't an option. There simply wasn't enough crown left to work with. The tree had already been through too much.

The right call was removal.

It's not always the outcome anyone wants β€” but safety has to come first. If a tree on your property has taken storm damage, get it assessed sooner rather than later.

What looks stable today may not be after the next wind event.

🌳 In 29 years of arboriculture, nature still finds ways to surprise me.

Here is a Paperbark tree from a footpath in Lapstone. The roots had been gradually worn down by foot and bicycle traffic over the years β€” and that damage had opened the door for Phytophthora, a root-eating fungus, to move in.

But here's what made this one special. πŸ”¬
The fungus began travelling up the tree. The tree fought back. And the result was a stunning twisting spiral pattern rising from the base β€” a visible record of the battle between tree and fungus, written in the wood itself.

It's a reminder that what's happening under the surface matters just as much as what you can see.

By the time damage is obvious, it's often been going on for a long time.

If you've got a tree you're not sure about β€” don't wait. Early intervention makes all the difference.

🌳 Lower Blue Mountains 🌳

We carried out weight reduction, targeted pruning, and directional pruning on a mature Peppercorn tree to help improve its balance and stability.

The work was needed after major earthworks on the neighbouring property severed a significant structural root on the other side of the fence. The root β€” approximately 30 cm thick and about one metre from the base of the tree β€” was likely playing an important role in supporting the tree against the prevailing winds.

As the homeowner was keen to retain the tree, the approach was to reduce canopy weight on the opposing side and encourage more central growth through directional pruning. This helps lessen wind loading and reduces the likelihood of the tree being overly affected by the loss of that root.

🌳 Lawson 🌳

Today’s work involved assessing and managing a Bloodwood with a decayed section developing at its base.

Because of the tree’s natural form, most of the wind loading was concentrated high in the canopy. During strong winds, this led to excessive sway, placing ongoing pressure on the base. Over time, a split formed along a weakened line of decayed timber.

Trees can appear solid from the outside, but hidden decay combined with wind movement can significantly affect stability. Situations like this highlight the importance of careful assessment and informed decision-making.

🌳 Wentworth Falls 🌳

We carried out targeted pruning to remove a first-order branch that was pushing against the rear of a garage.

Under NSW State legislation, any first-order branch (a branch growing directly from the trunk) that extends over a garage, dwelling, or commercial premises can be removed without council approval.

In this case, removing the branch prevented ongoing structural pressure while maintaining the overall integrity of the tree. A practical solution, done carefully and in line with the regulations.

Thoughtful tree management makes all the difference 🌿

🌿 Katoomba 🌿

Trimmed back a Lilly Pilly hedge that had started to take over a small yard.

Regular hedging keeps growth tidy and manageable, especially in tighter spaces where every bit of room counts. The aim was to reduce the material encroaching into the yard while maintaining a healthy, well-shaped hedge.

A simple trim can make a big difference to how a space feels 🌳
