One of today's jobs involved cleaning up some overgrown & messy areas, one involving a heap of periwinkle.

Periwinkle is a real pain to deal with and additional treatment is certainly going to be required in the future, but this gets us on the right track.

(If you choose to plant periwinkle in your garden then I suggest you be very careful about where you place it.)

Something as simple as trimming a few tree branches + applying marri woodchip mulch can make a major difference to a small garden area.

This is certainly a decent visual improvement for relatively little cost & effort.

Today saw the end of a big job at a property in Kalamunda.

We turned a big square of boring dirt into a new lawn area surrounded by garden beds. (Planting, mulching and a new stepping path to occur down the track.)

- Initial rake up of leaves + careful checks to ensure existing reticulation pipes and sprinklers would not be damaged by the mini loader.
- Removed the top layer of existing sand in the lawn area.
- New garden soil and lawn sand applied, lightly compacted down.
- Drip line retic added to the garden bed areas.
- Wetting agent and fertiliser put down before the lawn laid on top.
- Rained an awful lot today when laying the turf, which is great for the new lawn.

This will be a great transformation once the planting works are complete.

Some bulk mulching work today. This was a three stage process process over a couple of weeks involving an initial herbicide spray, whipper snip + rake up, then a thick mulch application.

A fun planting job today - turning a small unloved grass area into a new native garden bed, with 25 native plants put into the ground.

The process started 2 months ago when I started to kill off the lawn. Drip line retic was laid and a layer of mulch was applied to finish it off.

Big yard clean up today, with one part being the weeding / slashing of an area + pruning back two large mango trees. Bottom branches were cut away to allow better air flow and access around the trees, plus the heights were reduced down to a more manageable level.

One of my favourite projects to date: planting 130 new plants at Kalamunda Out Of School Centre for the purpose of a new black cockatoo friendly native garden. Most of the plants were supplied by Zanthorrea Nursery.

Loss of habitat and food sources are a major concern for our native black cockatoos, so I was really happy go be involved in this particular project. (This will also eventually provide habitat and hiding places for bobtails and Quenda.)

It's not a flashy landscaped type garden. But rather this is more of a natural bush planting approach, with varieties of different plants spread all over the place.

See the attached before and after video for the transformation.

Today was a small but enjoyable front yard tidy up.

The Lilly Pilly hedge was reduced fairly hard to chest height in order to make ongoing trimming much easier. (Lilly Pilly is tough so it will bounce back fine.)

Grass was removed from the garden beds + Jacaranda bases, an edge put back on the lawn, light trim of the Jacarandas, mulch applied.

(Waste was left on the front verge for council pick up.)

I was raking up part of a yard in Kalamunda today, and found a very well hidden bobtail under the leaf litter.

This is a good example of why it's important to check leaf piles or grass areas before you burn off or whipper snip.

Bobtails are territorial and mate for life, so moving them too far - or worse; accidentally killing them - can be pretty harmful for the local populations.

I'm always careful when performing any kind of work that could harm to these awesome little guys.
