The quality of the edges can be the factor that separates the professional paint job from the amateur. Neat edges are not difficult to achieve with some skill and preparation.

Painting edges are the joint between the plasterboard wall and either the skirting board or the cornice on the roof. Else, there are edges around a door or window frame.

Painting edges tips:

Use a smaller brush and put a small amount of paint in a shallow container. This way there will only be paint on the tip of the brush. A 50 mm to 63mm brush is a good size for this.
You can use masking tape to cover the side of the edge that is not to be painted. Make sure the surface is clean and that the masking tape is pressed down firmly.
A paintbrush with a slanted edge is designed to edge painting, though there are many professionals who stick with the straight brushes.
Make sure there is good lighting when you paint. This helps prevent any missed spots, especially when working with lighter colours. Some individuals like to use a light on their head (like miners use) to see he area that they paint.
When painting in tight corners it can help to wiggle the brush. This releases a little more paint onto the surface.
When painting into a 90 degree edge (like where the wall meets the ceiling) it helps to push paint into the edge on a first pass, and then spread the paint on a second pass.
If you do get paint on the wrong side of an edge you can remove it with a damp cloth. Try wrapping the cloth (one layer) around a flat putty knife or scraper and running it along the clean edge.

Professional Painters Sydney

Paint is very rarely applied directly to a surface. Most surfaces need a primer coat in order for the paint to bond well. Different surfaces, wood, plaster, metal …etc. usually require different primers.

Interior Residential House Painting Sydney

Most interior walls surfaces are Gyprock (plasterboard). This gyprock surface cannot be painted on without first applying primer. Without primer the paint soaks into the gyprock panels, giving a terrible result. And the plaster joints between the gyprock panels sow through the surface.

Primer gives Gyprock walls a neutral looking surface that bonds well to the final paint. The even texture from this primer prevents the joints in the wall from showing through.

Metal Primer

Metal is often tricky to paint as many chemical will not bind to the surface. This is especially true of aluminium. Primers for metal will etch into the metal surface, providing a slightly rough texture that bond with paint. These primers often have reasonably good rust proofing qualities.

Wood Primer

A different type of primer is used for wood. This primer will both fill in the grain of the wood and prevent the final paint from soaking in.

The paint used on gyprock can be used on wood if both surfaces have the right primer. But it is more common to paint woodwork a different colour or to stain the surface.

Some wood paints are designed show the grain of the wood through the final finish, and are to be used without primer. These are uncommon.

Masonry Primer

Masonry work like pipes will require masonry primer that will bond to the smooth surface.

What about paint with built in primer?

These do exist, but for several reasons they have never proved popular. For one thing they are rather pricy. It is cheaper to buy an ordinary primer and a good quality paint. Another problem is that these paints often need two coats, which takes the same amount of time as a primer with a topcoat. Finally, the paints with built in primer are not available in all colours and finishes, so you may not find the colour that you want.

Good quality paint over a decent primer offers a lot of décor possibilities.

Occasional Paint Problems

Professional Painters Sydney

New houses look good when completed with a fine paint job. Problems here are very rare. But older homes are a different matter. Conditions sometimes do not lend themselves to good painting results, or perhaps to the painted finish lasting very long. In these cases the walls and home may need some renovation work before a good paint job is possible.

Blistering

Blistering that develops over time is almost certainly caused by moisture underneath the paint. This strongly suggests a serious problem with leaking in the plumbing or from the roof. Have this inspected because long term water problems can cause serious damage.

Some external paint will blister after years in the Sun, but this is usually no cause for concern.

Chalking

This is where a fine powder, like chalk, appears on the paint surface. Mild cases of this are of no real concern; this occurs on newly painted walls. But if the chalking continues there is a problem. The pain may have been thinned too much, of the surface was poorly prepared.

Preparing a surface before painting, cleaning with sugar soap, will prevent 99% of chalking problems.

Mud Cracking

If irregular lines form in your paintwork, looking like cracked concrete or mud, then there has been a problem with the painting. This is probably due to a porous surface that has not been primed. Removal of the damage paint, followed by priming and repainting, is needed to repair the problem.

Mildew

This is basically a fungus that grow in damp, dark conditions. Poor ventilation make the problem worse.

Bleach will remove mildew.

Quality acrylic paints will offer a fair degree of protection against mildew.

Peeling

If the paint peels off then either the surface was dirty before painting or there was no primer under the paint.

These surfaces will have to be sanded back and repainted correctly with an appropriate primer under quality paint.

Wrinkling

If paint is too thick, and this includes painting a second coat before the first coat has dried, then paint will tend to wrinkle. It may also wrinkle if the surface is greasy.

This type of damage will require repainting, with undercoat and adequate drying time between coats.

Yellowing Paint

Some paints will slowly turn yellow if exposed to continual heat or if left in dark conditions. Good quality paint resists this yellowing.

Residential House Painting Sydney

The paint used on a home’s exterior is very different to the paint used for interior walls, and different again to many other types of paint.

Where interior paint is formulated for easy cleaning and soft light reflection external paint is formulated to resist fading in sunlight and to resist mould. There is no good reason for using one type of paint in a situation that is better suited to another type of paint.

Paint for a home exterior is almost always glossy. These paints may also be oil based, though water based exterior paints also exist. It is easier to use oil based paints outdoors because fumes are less of an issue.

The resin in exterior paint, which is connected to the glossy finish, is much tougher than the resin in interior paint. It is this resin that binds the pigment in the paint to the wall surface. The tougher resin in exterior paint will resist temperature changes and fading from sunlight. And while exterior paintwork will eventually chip and peel in harsh weather the exterior paint is far more resistant to this damage than almost any other types of paint.

Priming, Sealing and Undercoat.

Wood is usually coated with a primer, sealer or undercoat before painting. Primer is designed to give a suitable, slightly rough surface for paint to bind to. Sealer is to prevent paint from soaking into a timber (or other) surface. Undercoat gives a neutral, consistent surface, so that nothing shows through the final paint job. Undercoat makes timber and plaster repairs look identical when painted over.

Some products combine the characteristics of primers, sealers and undercoat.

Some external parts of the home may be metal, masonry, cement, or material other than wood. Each of these must be primed and painted with paint suitable for this surface.
