The change in season is really starting to be felt over the last two weeks. Dahlias are blowing their centres to expose their pollen for the bees, in a last minute attempt to create seed before winter and ultimate die back sets in. Mildew has also started to take over, and the plants are looking tired and ready to hibernate - I can start to sympathise too as the close of my season arrives 😉.
But alas, there is no rest for me with a mass of weeding, bed prep, transplanting and seedling planting forecast for the next few weeks, whilst I wait for the dahlias to completely die back for the big annual dig and divide in about 6 weeks time.
Strangely, it is a time I enjoy - pulling out the old crops to make room for the new. Stripping everything back to its bare bones again and dreaming of next season.
But tonight, I did take time to stop and enjoy the last or the spent cosmos against the evening sky, and admire their airy beauty for one last time this year before they are destined for the compost heap.
