Spray Painting Timber Battens â How to Get a Factory Finish Every Time
Thinking of spray painting battens for your next project? đ¨ Spraying can achieve an ultra-smooth, factory-like finish, but it requires the right technique, tools, and prepâespecially when working with timber battens with open gaps.
đĄ Hereâs how we do it at YB Painting:
â
Spray Tip Size Matters:
For batten walls with wide gaps between slats, we recommend using a 308 or 310 tip. Why? Because it gives you:
Better control and precision đ§
Less overspray (which = less waste) đ¸
A cleaner finish with minimal risk of runs or orange peel texture
â
Low Pressure is Key:
Use your airless sprayer on low pressure to maximise control and reduce mist. It also helps avoid overloading the surface with too much paint.
â
Spray All 4 Sides:
Batten profiles often have 4 visible surfaces (top, bottom, front, and back), and they must all be coated evenly to avoid patchy finishes.
â
Protect Surroundings Thoroughly:
Due to the gaps between battens, overspray can easily blow through. Make sure to mask and cover all nearby surfacesâespecially walls, floors, and glass.
â
Avoiding Paint Runs & Overbuild:
Applying too much paint in one pass can cause sagging, runs, or a textured finish. Use light, even passes and overlap slightly for a smooth, consistent coat.
