Subjective I know, but it feels the season shifted gears a little early and turned my head to next year. The Spring meadow has had its second cut for the year, just as the saffron was finishing, before the leaves get too long. It can be tricky getting the timing right, so as not to behead other early rising bulbs. The mower was on its highest setting. The pots are just a few things belatedly waiting to get out there. Pic 1 to 3
The prairie styled meadow has drifted into autumn and beyond, a few pics here as a reminder it is not all about perennials and grasses, some shrubs have a place too. This space will be gone into earlier this year as I get on top of some of the thugs, and hopefully get some decent editing done. Pics 4 to 10
Next year we will be bringing in a few more Edimentals, ornamental edibles. The have your cake and eat it too plants. Pic 11 and 12
Finally a very infant area of Australian natives. Inspired by the woody meadow projects in Melbourne, but with a cold climate take on it. A whole lot of the woody meadow plants used in those projects will not take a few -8 frosts. So I have a lot of testing to do. I would ask you to be patient with me in this space as there will be some failures for sure, but I'm sure some pop as well. All in all, plenty to get up for in the morning

Over the last few weeks I have been removing a wheelbarrow load or two of seed heads per day that I do not want to go through the mulcher later in the year. Some of the normal culprits, that I love, but only so much. Amni majus, Bronze Fennel, helianthus giganteus, penstemon barbatus, digitalis ferruginea, Inula magnifica, some centaurea and others. All useful in the community of bug and bird heaven, but we shall see if some get ousted in time. And, you know, gotta make room for all the new and interesting things I will no doubt be buying tomorrow. The last pic is just a clean slate area waiting for spring. First frost due on Sunday morning, another tipping turn of the season.

Meant to do this earlier as a post, but came out as a story...anyway, one for the brains trust. I got this as an unnamed salvia. I think possibly sagittata, or maybe macrophylla, although the leaves look more arrow shaped, sagittata to me. Or perhaps a cross as they have done so before. Either way very lovely.

While cutting back some of the heat affected perennials I was reminded of this Eryngium ebracteatum, which I've been looking at as a replacement for some of the droopier forms of sanguisorba. Has a lovely open airy feel to the baubles, and foliage much easier to deal with than Eryngium decaisneana, which I have fallen out of love with. And even though ebracteatum doesn't mind a bit of moisture when at home it seems to sail through a drought!

The first of the Acis autumnalis serves as a reminder to get a wriggle on with the cut back of the spring meadow. There's a certain momentary quiet counterpoint to the summer garden that appeals in its own way. But making way for the saffron and other autumn bulbs when they are ready. There will be some cutting back soon too of some of the early or heat, and wind!, affected perennials in the summer garden. But thats just a yearly job, and an opportunity to observe what works and what does not. The cycle continues

Another Asphodeline, this time A taurica. Much more willowy than the ramosus a few posts ago. I can see myself working toward a drift of these.
