Key Elements of a Quality Timber Paling Fence

Kev’s Total Yard Care – Mackay

Thinking about getting a new timber paling fence built?
Here are a few key things to look for to make sure it’s done properly and built to last 👇

🔹 Correct Post Holes

Hole diameter should be roughly 3× the post width

Hole depth should be about ⅓ of the post height above ground
➡️ This keeps your fence stable and helps it stand strong during wild Mackay weather.

🔹 Exposed Footings

Concrete footings should sit slightly above ground level
➡️ This prevents soil and lawn from sitting against your posts.

🔹 No Timber in Dirt

Timber should never be buried directly in soil
➡️ Dirt holds moisture → moisture causes rot → fence fails early.

🔹 Post Spacing

Posts are typically spaced at 2.4m centres
➡️ Correct spacing prevents rails from bowing and sagging.

🔹 Three Rails for Strength
A proper paling fence should have:
✅ Top rail
✅ Middle rail
✅ Bottom rail
➡️ This gives structure, strength, and keeps palings secure.

🔹 Paling Fixing

Two galvanised nails per rail per paling

Palings should sit just above ground for airflow
➡️ Helps prevent rotting and warping.

🔹 Capping (Highly Recommended)

Capping protects the tops of the palings from moisture
➡️ Looks tidier + extends life.

✅ Why It Matters
These small details can be the difference between a fence lasting 5–7 years
and a fence lasting 15+ years.

So, if you’re getting a fence built, keep these points in mind —
and make sure your installer is doing it right.

✅ Tips to Get the Most Life Out of Your Timber Paling Fence

A well-built timber fence should stay strong and look great for many years — with a little care, you can help it go the distance. Here’s how:

🔹 1. Keep the base clear
Avoid piling mulch, soil or garden beds against the fence — trapped moisture speeds up rot.

🔹 2. Trim plants back
Bushes and vines hold moisture against the timber. Keep growth trimmed to allow airflow.

🔹 3. Seal or oil regularly
A coat of oil, stain or sealer every 2–3 years protects from sun and rain, helping your fence retain its colour and strength.

🔹 4. Fix small issues early
Loose palings, wobbly posts or early signs of decay are cheaper to repair early rather than replace later.

🔹 5. Clean yearly
A quick hose-down once or twice a year keeps mould and grime in check. Use a mild outdoor cleaner if needed — avoid high-pressure blasting as it can damage timber fibres.

🔹 6. Watch sprinkler direction
Constant wetting from irrigation can shorten your fence’s lifespan — aim sprinklers toward your plants, not the fence!
