TCL TCL is an internationally acclaimed landscape architecture and urban design interested in the poetic

Since 1989, Taylor Cullity Lethlean have undertaken an investigation into the poetic expression of the Australian Landscape and contemporary culture. This has permeated our design work in a multiplicity of public settings from urban waterfronts to desert walking trails. In each case the detailed exploration of context, site and community have informed outcomes and enriched the patterning and detai

l of built landscapes. Four streams of investigation have informed the practice’s work:
Contemporary urban life and global culture
The elemental power of site and landscape
Artistic practice in a range of disciplines
The creation of a sustainable future
The results of this dynamic dialogue with clients, communities, academics, and colleagues is an eclectic body of work woven together by a common thread of quality, commitment, and surprisingly simple but rich environments which support the life of the communities they serve. This success is born out of an open studio based approach where the principals lead the design of each project supported by a talented group of landscape architects and urban designers.

In line with our Reconciliation Action Plan, TCL has updated our approach to the January 26th public holiday so staff can choose what’s right for them.

January 26 means different things to different people. For many First Nations peoples, it is a day of mourning that marks the start of ongoing injustice, dispossession and resistance following the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.

That’s why we’re formalising what we’ve done in previous years through a new policy, offering all staff the option to swap the public holiday for an alternate day. This practical step reflects our RAP commitments, acknowledges the significance of the conversation, and supports an inclusive workplace where different perspectives are respected.

Today is the International Day of Education, recognising education as a human right and forms the foundations for peace and sustainability. This year’s theme, "The power of youth in co-creating education," is a timely reminder that learning is shaped by the places and communities around it.

At UNSW Kensington, TCL’s Village Green Redevelopment reflects that idea in spatial reality: transforming a once limited-use elite cricket oval into a welcoming wellness precinct that supports sport, social connection and everyday campus life. Co-creation is embedded through "A Well Being" an integrated artwork by Agatha Gothe-Snape, featuring 87 handwritten words and phrases drawn from student and staff consultation, inviting everyone to reflect on what wellbeing means to them.

Designing inclusive, healthy places helps create the conditions where learning can thrive.

Nambour (Namba) is envisioned as a vibrant hinterland hub — a place where cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and community life intertwine.

Together with the Sunshine Coast Council, TCL has developed a Place Plan that draws on the patterns of climate, the living fabric of trees, celebratory vistas, and site-specific narratives to reimagine streets and spaces that express care, continuity, and belonging.

A framework for people, nature, and culture — shaping a future that feels both grounded and full of possibility.

Namba sits on the land of the Kabi Kabi people.

The article in The Age today beautifully captures the vision behind the new elephant habitat at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

“We wanted the elephants to make decisions, particularly the matriarch… That’s exactly what a matriarch in a wild herd would be doing, taking the herd to a different area to find food. And that’s pretty groundbreaking,” Dr. Mark Pilgrim, Zoo Director.

For us at TCL, this project was about creating a living landscape where elephants can roam, swim, and explore, while visitors experience the majesty of these animals in a setting that feels natural and immersive.

"It was really about observing and understanding what the animal habits were... what do Elephants like to do?"

Lisa Howard, TCL Director, reflects on our commitment to designing spaces that prioritise the elephants’ perspective. The habitat includes deep swimming pools, open roaming zones, and even visitor underpasses – creating an immersive yet respectful experience.

This was a true collaboration with an exceptional team:

“Historical Mapping” Part 6 [of 8]

Speculative research on Meanjin, this work was undertaken as part of a desire to understand the deep history of this setting. It's cultural values and the observable changes that have occurred over the last 188 years.

“Before European settlement, the land, the river, and its tributaries were the source and support of life in all its dimensions. The rivers abundant supply of food included fish, shellfish, crab, and shrimp. Good fishing places became campsites and the focus of group activities.” History of Brisbane

[Como Terraces 3 of 3] Community, Crafted in Green.

At Como Terraces, community finds space to breathe and belong. Two shared garden spaces offer more than beauty — they offer a place to connect with nature, and eachother. Residents gather around outdoor dining settings, linger near water features, and rest in shaded, integrated seating areas.

The landscape is carefully choreographed as a balance between privacy and shared experience.

[Como Terraces 2 of 3] A Living Tapestry

“Residents and visitors are welcomed through whispering sheoaks, the shadow patterns of the trees playing off against strong architectural forms.” – Lisa Howard, TCL Director

Como Terraces weaves together native and exotic plantings, echoing both the habitat-rich corridor of the Birrarung and the ornamental heritage of Como House. A dialogue between natural and architectural heritage.

A meandering pedestrian path flows through rock, grasses, and flowering groundcovers. Canopy trees tower within the built form working to blur boundaries and soften walkways.

The METRONET Morley - Ellenbrook line project had great success recently in the West Australian Chapter of the Institute of Architects awards, receiving the highest accolade, the George Temple Poole Award. The transport project connecting Perths north-east with the CBD was also endowed with the Public Architecture Award and Wallace Greenham Award for Sustainable Architecture and  Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture. As it received two 'named awards', the project will move up to the National Awards programme also.

A huge effort from many TCL in collaboration with , Bagot, and client O’Rourke this is the largest expansion of the West Australian rail network in over a decade. This project is not just an investment in infrastructure but in people and place, acting as a key node in inclusive, resilient and connected communities.

When the Heinz factory closed in Girgarre in 2012, the community lost more than just jobs—it lost support for local groups and services. But out of this challenge came a bold vision: Gargarro Botanic Garden. Designed by TCL, this garden is a place to gather, grow, and thrive.

Inspired by the Goulburn River, local farmlands and the spectaular land of the Yorta Yorta People, the Garden showcases Australian native plants through innovative horticulture, a unique recirculating water feature, and strong community involvement. This contemporary garden offers a vibrant, sustainable landscape celebrating Australia’s natural beauty and heritage.

Thanks to land gifted by Heinz and the dedication of the Girgarre community, Gargarro is becoming a vibrant space for connection, creativity, and nature.

This semester, fourth-year Landscape Architecture Students from Adelaide University took their learning beyond the studio with a series of walking tours led by TCL Associate Alex Lock, as part of the Advanced Landscape Architecture Construction Technologies subject.

The tour allowed students to explore real-world examples of construction detailing in the landscape—bridging theory with practice and deepening their understanding of how design is translated into built form. Observing, sketching, and discussing the art of detailing across some of TCL's iconic projects including Victoria Square, Festival Plaza and the South Parklands Wetlands.

The inaugural 2014 Kevin Taylor Legacy recipient -filmmaker Kasimir Burgess - has premiered his documentary ‘Iron Winter’ in the prestigious Visions du Reel film competition in Switzerland this month, only one of two Australians to be invited to participate.

Iron Winter takes place in Mongolia’s remote Tsakhir Valley and documents two young herders who face the greatest challenge of their young lives safeguarding 1,000 horses during the deadliest winter on record.

Kasimir Burgess spent months in extreme conditions, in temperatures of minus fifty degrees Celsius, in order to develop a meaningful collaboration with the young herders. He has crafted an epic, spectacular and chilling film about survival, which slowly transforms into a personal and poignant coming-of-age tale about friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle to maintain one’s identity amidst cultural and environmental change.
