🌿 When the hedge has been living its best life for a little TOO long... 🌿
Today - Two pittosporum hedges. Both 5 metres tall. One of them so tall it was basically applying for a job as part of the roofline. πŸ˜…
Today we brought them back down to earth β€” one down the side of the house reduced right down to just under gutter level, because yes, it had genuinely reached the gutters. These weren't hedges anymore, they were a statement. A very loud, very leafy statement.
This is exactly the kind of job where you need the right gear AND the experience to back it up. We're talking professional commercial equipment, not the trusty old electric trimmer from Bunnings β€” and years of knowing exactly how hard you can push a pittosporum before it bounces back better than ever (spoiler: pretty hard πŸ’ͺ).
Big hedges, overgrown hedges, hedges that have clearly been left to their own devices β€” we've seen it all and we're not scared. πŸ˜„
If your hedges are starting to resemble a scene from Jurassic Park, it might be time to call in the professionals. We've got the gear, the experience, and the genuine enthusiasm for tackling the jobs that make others back away.
πŸ“² Drop us a message or give us a call for a quote β€” no hedge too big, no situation too overgrown!

🌿 Plant Focus Thursday is back β€” and this week it's the Jade Plant! (Crassula ovata)
Look at this absolute legend. 😍 Flowering its little heart out in the middle of a Melbourne winter. While everything else in the garden is having a nap, the Jade Plant is out here showing off clusters of delicate little white star-shaped flowers like it's nobody's business. Respect. πŸ™Œ
So what's the deal with the Jade Plant?
It's a succulent β€” those gorgeous, thick, glossy green leaves store water like a camel, which means it basically laughs in the face of drought and neglect. Forget to water it for a few weeks? It doesn't care. Stick it in a pot and ignore it? Still thriving.
Why we love it for Melbourne gardens:
β˜€οΈ Loves a sunny spot β€” full sun to part shade, it's not fussy
πŸ’§ Extremely drought tolerant once established β€” very low water needs
🌸 Flowers in winter/spring when not much else is going on in the garden β€” bonus colour when you need it most!
πŸͺ΄ Works beautifully in pots, garden beds, or as a low border plant
βœ‚οΈ Virtually zero maintenance β€” just a light tidy up now and then
Fun fact: In many cultures the Jade Plant is considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity. So really, planting one is basically a financial strategy. πŸ’°πŸ˜‚
If you want a plant that looks great, asks for almost nothing in return, and throws out a surprise flower show in the depths of winter β€” the Jade Plant is your answer. 🌿
Drop a 🌿 in the comments if you've got one in your garden!

🌿 Planting day done! 3 x Callistemon Little John + 3 x Correa Dusky Bells are in the ground and looking great.
Now, can we talk about something for a second? πŸ‘‡
One of the biggest mistakes people make when planting a garden bed is choosing plants that will outgrow the space. It happens ALL the time. The plant looks perfect at the nursery, goes in the ground, and three years later it's eaten half the path, swallowed the fence and needs a chainsaw to manage. πŸ˜…
We chose these two specifically because they are perfectly sized for this bed β€” compact, tidy, and they'll stay that way. No fighting, no overcrowding, no drama.
And as Australian natives, they're absolute troopers. πŸ’ͺ Hardy, drought tolerant, low maintenance once established, and they'll bring in the birds too. 🐦
The right plant in the right spot = a garden that works for you, not against you.

Welcome to the inaugural Plant Focus Thursday!

Every Thursday, we’re dropping some plant knowledge on your feed. First up to the plate: The architectural superstar, the Aeonium.
Look at those perfect rosettes! 😍 If you want a plant that looks like a giant, structural flower but requires a fraction of the effort, this is your guy.
Why it’s a winner:
It brings serious structural WOW factor to any space. You can get them in bright, vibrant green (like these stunners we spotted today in Camberwell) or go full garden-goth with the dark purple/black Aeonium 'Zwartkop'.
The Melbourne Care Cheat Sheet:
β˜€οΈ Light: Loves the sun, but appreciates a tiny bit of shade on those blistering 40-degree February afternoons.
πŸ’§ Water: Thrives on neglect. Seriously. Just don't drown them in heavy, boggy soil.
❄️ Winter: A bit of a wimp when it comes to heavy frost, so tuck them somewhere slightly sheltered if your suburb gets icy.
Did you know?
When one of those rosettes finally decides to shoot out a massive flower, that specific rosette will die off afterwards. It sounds dramatic, but it leaves behind a bunch of babies (pups) around the stem to keep the party going! πŸͺ΄
Need a garden full of low-maintenance stunners but don't have the time to maintain it? That's exactly what we're here for! Send us a message to get your garden sorted. 🌿✨

πŸ‚ Leaves of Melbourne... your time is up. πŸ˜„
We've just added the Stihl SHA 140 Battery Vacuum Shredder to the arsenal β€” and autumn doesn't stand a chance. This beast vacuums, shreds and bags leaves in one go, making light work of even the messiest autumn garden. ⚑🍁
Melbourne is absolutely blanketed in leaves right now, and we are HERE for it. πŸ’ͺ
If your garden is disappearing under a sea of autumn leaves, give us a call β€” we'll have it cleaned up before you can say "where did my lawn go?" πŸ˜‚

βœ‚οΈ The hedges in Blackburn were NOT messing around today. πŸ˜…
Three pittosporum hedges. Two of them facing straight onto a main road. One very large pile of green waste by the end of it. 🌿πŸ’ͺ
When you own an investment property, the street appeal of your hedges is doing a LOT of work β€” it's the first impression every single person gets as they drive past. Keeping them clean, level and well-shaped says "this property is looked after" β€” and that matters whether you're attracting tenants or just keeping the neighbours happy. πŸ˜„
We're based right here in Blackburn, so if your hedges are looking a little wild and in need of some serious attention β€” we're just around the corner! πŸ“ž
Local. Reliable. And yes, we can handle the big ones. βœ…πŸŒΏ

πŸ‹ Citrus Gall Wasp on Lemon Trees β€” What To Look For

Have you noticed strange swollen lumps on the branches of your lemon tree?
There’s a good chance it could be Citrus Gall Wasp.

These swollen sections (called galls) are caused by tiny wasps laying eggs inside young citrus stems. Over time the branch swells as larvae develop inside.

⚠️ Common signs:
β€’ Swollen, lumpy stems
β€’ Reduced tree health and vigour
β€’ Poor fruit production over time
β€’ Most common on lemon trees

βœ… The good news: it can be managed properly with the right timing and pruning.

The best time to remove affected branches is during winter before the adult wasps emerge in spring.

Important:
❌ Don’t put infected branches in your green bin without sealing them first
❌ Don’t heavily prune citrus during peak frost periods
βœ… Dispose of affected material correctly
βœ… Work with neighbours to manage citrus gall wasp collectively β€” adult wasps can easily spread between nearby citrus trees, so treating multiple properties in the area often gives much better long-term control
βœ… Horticultural oils can also help reduce egg laying in spring, as adult citrus gall wasps tend to avoid laying eggs on fresh growth coated with oil

At Horticulture HQ we can inspect citrus trees, identify gall wasp damage and carry out corrective pruning to help keep trees healthy and productive.

Did you know the white milky sap that comes out of Euphorbia plants when trimmed is actually the plant’s natural defence system? 🌿
I was pruning some Mediterranean Spurge - Euphorbia characias this week and the customer asked about the strange white liquid leaking from the stems.

The sap is called latex and helps protect the plant from insects and animals feeding on it. It’s one of the reasons Euphorbias are such hardy, resilient plants in the garden.

Interesting fact though β€” the sap can irritate skin and eyes, so it’s always a good idea to wear gloves when pruning them.

Nature has some pretty clever ways of protecting itself.

Not all weeds are the same 🌱

A common question in lawn care is the difference between broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds.

Broadleaf weeds are usually easy to spot because they have wider leaves and stand out against the lawn β€” examples include clover, oxalis and dandelions.

Grassy weeds are trickier, as they often blend into the turf and look similar to grass β€” things like winter grass and crabgrass.

The important part? Different weeds require different treatment methods. Correct identification is key to achieving a healthy, weed-free lawn.

If you’re unsure what’s taking over your lawn, feel free to get in touch 🌿

βœ‚οΈπŸŒΏ Precision garden care in β€” because the details matter.
This week we had the pleasure of working at a stunning Brighton property, and jobs like this are exactly why we love what we do.
The brief? Ficus hedge trimming, ficus topiary ball shaping, and a full garden tidy β€” and the results are nothing short of spectacular. 😍
Topiary is an art form. Getting those clean lines, perfectly shaped balls and crisp hedge edges takes patience, a sharp eye, and the right tools β€” and we take enormous pride in getting every cut just right.
Brighton homes deserve nothing less than perfection, and we're proud to deliver it. 🏑✨
If your hedges and topiary are due for some attention, we'd love to help. Get in touch today. πŸ“ž
