Behind a quaint hundred year old cottage in the village of Yarraville in Melbourne’s inner-west lies a biophilic breath of fresh air, with a roof garden that’s an urban oasis for its owners and flora and fauna alike.

Curvy Cottage, Yarraville, a two storey extension to a heritage house in Melbourne’s inner West where the brief was for a house with garden views from every room. 🍃😊

The new addition is set back from the existing house to create a verdant sunny courtyard in between, allowing natural light come into the new living spaces over the top of the old heritage roof.

Sweeping curves soften the form of the addition while reflecting the organic shapes in the garden, and reduce overshadowing on neighbouring properties and our own open space.

The rooftop garden at Curvy Cottage, Yarraville, is an inner city oasis for its owners and more-than-human life alike.

Rooftop urban greening is another level of sustainable design, helping address the urban heat island effect and storm water retention while providing a biodiverse habitat for birds and insects.

It’s also a beautiful relaxing sanctuary for humans, a place to reconnect with nature amongst beautiful colours and fragrances, under an expansive sky, surrounded the heritage rooftops of Melbourne’s inner west.

The organic form of the new addition curves in plan and section to minimise shadowing on external open spaces below while contributing to spatial flow internally.

Blooming Bungalow unfolds as a verdant extension in Northcote—where lush, planted courtyards draw greenery and light deep into the heart of a young family’s home.
Designed for passionate gardeners, the addition is composed of two interconnected pavilions that gently open around a central courtyard. Positioned to capture northern light above the original bungalow roofline, this inner garden becomes the tranquil heart of the home.

Above, sculpted roof forms twist upward toward the sun—like flowers in bloom—revealing triangular highlight windows that wash the interiors in soft morning and midday light

A home shaped by light, nature, and the unfolding rhythm of family life and growth. ☀️🌱😊
