OPEN HOUSE | 3,000 opportunities to step inside the New Footscray Hospital were offered to the public and claimed within days. For a place known as the People’s Hospital, the response felt fitting.

Born from community advocacy and shaped through collaboration, the hospital opened itself to the public yesterday ahead of its official opening, inviting people to explore spaces designed for care, connection and wellbeing. From the Village Green to the hospital street, visitors moved through a precinct conceived not only as a healthcare facility, but as part of the daily life of Melbourne’s west.

Footscray Hospital Community Open Day was presented by Western Health and Open House Melbourne, with thanks to the Plenary Group Health consortium including Cox Architecture and Tract Consultants, Victoria University, Footscray Community Arts, the Australian Tapestry Workshop and the Victorian Government. Our team joined the community - both hosting and sharing in the curiosity, pride and sense of ownership felt throughout the day.

The New Footscray Hospital officially opens on 18 February.

SHARE THE DIGNITY | Across our studios, BLP participated in Share the Dignity’s ‘it’s in the bag’ campaign, aimed at providing essentials to women, girls and others who menstruate in a domestic violence or homeless shelter.

Bags were packed with all sorts of essentials, including pads, tampons, baby wipes, shampoo and conditioner, baby wash, nappies, deodorant and more.

To help end period poverty and assist women and girls going through hardship donations are welcome

FOOTSCRAY HOSPITAL SNEAK PEAK | The new hospital in Footscray VIC has opened its doors to the community for a first look at the design.

The $1.5 billion project is one of the state’s largest health infrastructure projects, with over 500 beds, and facilities to treat an extra 15,000 patients each year. 20,000 extra patients are estimated to be seen each year by the emergency department, improving pressure on nearby hospitals.

The façade has been designed to allow ample natural light, creating an environment that will support patients, staff and families.

EQUITY BY DESIGN | As part of BLP’s involvement with the Champions of Change coalition, Tara Veldman, Principal, Member of Architects Group, will be attending the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 69th Session in New York.
The CSW is the chief global policy making body on women’s rights and gender equality.

In 2025 the focus for CSW is a review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly.

Why are we going?

- Listen and learn from the collective efforts and experience of women driving change internationally and bring ideas back to the Coalition in Australia.

- Share the Champions of Change approach and practical actions for engaging leaders and engaging across sectors on gender equality as a contribution to a global action-oriented discussion

- Profile the Champions of Change strategy and the Equity by Design Framework with a view to accelerating progress towards gender equality internationally.

This year, CSW 69 remains unaffected operationally, but broader US policies could shape the political tone and debates during the session. We look forward to understanding this evolving environment.

International Women’s Day is celebrated this weekend on Saturday, 8 March. It’s the perfect time to celebrate ALL the women shaping our world.
