Five Contemporary Homes Immersed in the Victorian Countryside

From the hills near Daylesford to Mornington's coast and the alpine country, these five contemporary homes make a strong case for the invigorating possibilities of a retreat. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and considered planning ensure the landscape is never out of view, while material palettes drawn from the land itself and the sheer solitude of each site offer a genuine change of pace from city life.

This Palm Beach Residence by Atelier Alwill Is a Study in Balance, Grace and Sanctuary

Creative director Romaine Alwill approaches every project through the lens of timelessness — crafting deeply personal, enduring spaces that provide sanctuary, joy and nourishment for those who inhabit them. For this Palm Beach residence, that philosophy manifests in interiors that hold restraint and expression in equal measure, where the quiet pause is considered just as important as the louder moments.

Our Edit of Hand-Worked Timber Joinery

A counter-move to the perfectly flush is afoot — hand-carved, hammered and rippled timber surfaces that wear the maker's mark, catch the light differently and bring a layered kind of warmth to a room. Across bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms, designers are commissioning joinery whose texture does as much work as its tone.

Arent&Pyke Brings Gentle Curves to a Federation Home

Gentle curves chart a bridge between the heritage codes of this Federation Arts and Crafts-style home and its contemporary proportions. In Mosman's harbourside setting, Bradleys Head House by Arent&Pyke and TKD Architects conserves an inherent 1900s identity while modernising the traditional layout — a three-storey extension threading seamlessly through a home that has always known how to hold its character.

This Canadian Lakeside Home Emerges From Rock and Moss

On a small island in Ontario’s Georgian Bay, a secluded cottage unfolds as a place where architecture converses with the surrounding nature, and where time leaves a welcome trace.

A Modernist-Inspired Lakeside Home in Poland by LOFT Design Studio

Chy House by LOFT Design Studio is located on Lake Kierski in a small town near Poznan, Poland. Led by architect Patryk Matyja and creative director Konrad Opala, the architecture and interior design practice drew inspiration from the history of modernist architecture to inform the home’s design.

Working with a site that exists in such a picturesque location, the design team sought opportunities to highlight moments of connection between the interior and its perspective on the lake beyond, enabling an “intimate relationship” between the home and its natural surroundings.

“The positioning of the house and the arrangement of windows create a stage for nature. This allows the residents to be quiet observers of the extraordinary changes in the environment typical of this geographic region.”

- Architect, Patryk Matyja

Lucas Jimeno Dualde Converts a Brazilian Country Stable

Isolated within Rio de Janeiro's bucolic landscape, an abandoned stable is reinterpreted as a country home, becoming an extension of its setting. Palisaded by the idyllic mountainous ranges of Itaipava — where the city's affluent society frequents for its winter escape — the 80-year-old structure has been revived by Barcelona-born architect Lucas Jimeno Dualde into a commodious family home where the owners can host family and friends.

In Conversation with Tom Kundig

During his recent visit to Australia, coinciding with Melbourne Design Week, est managing director Miffy Coady sat down with North American architect and Olson Kundig principal Tom Kundig.

"If the architecture could just go away, that would be ideal. That's the premise—making something that feels like it isn't really there. It doesn't disappear, but it sits in the landscape in a way that feels natural and quiet. The landscape is already beautiful. My job is not to screw it up. And the problem is, when you see buildings in books or videos, you forget that they're part of this much larger space. That relationship is the important thing."

— Tom Kundig
