Par 3 House as featured on this week.

“When designing a new home for his parents (who were moving ‘into town’ after 50 years of farm life) architect Blair Smith had a few things to consider .

The house needed to accommodate ageing in place so his parents could live comfortably and in close proximity to their hobbies for many years to come.

Another key driver was the look of the house, which had to meet a stringent style guide in the new West Busselton estate, located about two and half hours south of Perth.

Not wanting to add another volume-built house to the block, Blair designed a fully bespoke home balancing his parent’s taste with the architectural vernacular of the area, and the proportions of its keystone-shaped block.

The project name, Par 3 House, is both a nod to a nearby golf course, and indicative of the house representing the ‘third chapter’ in Blair’s parent’s lives.”

Thanks to for the eloquent article, a link is in our bio.

Par 3 House has been sensitively configured to respond to a stringent style guide on a suburban block, exemplifying an alternative to a volume built housing solution, particularly for regional cities like Busselton.

Entry to this home is between two rammed earth pavilions that are linked by a glazed vestibule. Where the surrounding “girthy” homes typically position home cinemas deep within the floor plate, this home has a central courtyard which offers amenity to a living pavilion at the rear of the site.

A small balcony to a bedroom facing the street has been conceived as an informal place to have a morning coffee or an early evening drink, with the intent of fostering neighbourhood engagement.

Par 3 House

Situated in the “living pavilion” at the most private end of the site, the kitchen and laundry is articulated as a freestanding piece of joinery, with the raked ceiling continuing overhead. A large blackbutt island forms a warm, tactile point to gather during mealtimes.
