NH Architecture is a leading Australian design studio founded on the principles of collaboration and open debate, where architects and designers are united by a commitment to creating outstanding contemporary architecture. We seek a new expression for architecture as a public construction unencumbered by the traditional and narrow definitions of function or type. We believe design is no longer the

domain of the egocentric architect with a single vision. Instead we believe projects are complex and inclusive, where the architect acts as both creator and mediator, providing the platform for clients, engineers, planners and the broader community to engage fully with the process of design. This collaborative approach also reflects the evolving relationship between governments, authorities and the private sector for the delivery of major infrastructure and partnership projects. NH Architecture is leading the thinking towards integrated and flexible environments and an architecture capable of engaging with the complexities of the contemporary Australian city.

We’ve worked closely with Heritage Victoria to preserve and respect the original interiors of the Theatres Building, designed by John Truscott.

Here you can see NH architects Emily and Jack holding up samples of gold leaf, to find the best match to the existing signage.

NH has been working with the team since 2015 to plan the sensitive restoration works.

The new design will enhance the experience of the theatre for both patrons and performers. Improved acoustics upgraded seating and universal access facilities will all bring the theatre experience up to global standards. Improvements are also planned for the back of house spaces, which will add new loading docks, scenery lifts, a green room and rehearsal and function spaces.

We like to put people at the centre of what we do, both in our approach to design and when it comes to supporting the careers of our team at the studio.

We know that good parental leave strategies promote equity and fairness. So, when it came to updating our parental leave policy, we considered how best to assist our team to navigate parenthood and their careers at NH.

Practice Manager Sarah Gowers, who was instrumental in the process said: “In the most immediate effect, a parental leave policy like ours allows primary and secondary care givers to be supported in what is just the most monumental shift in a person’s life. With this updated scheme, we are basically saying, ‘you’re important to us, not just in your professional life but also outside it, we value you as a whole person and want to support you.”

We recently asked our team about their commute to work as part of our studio’s efforts to achieve net zero emissions certification. The results were very illuminating:

🚶‍♀️ Most of our team will walk as part of their weekly commute to work.
🚗 Cars make up only 6.5% of the modes of transport to commute to work and
🚋 Only 16% of our team use a car in their weekly commute.
🚉 Trains take our team the furthest in their weekly commute.

Follow along here for more updates on our journey to achieving net zero.

Early Works have started around the Theatres Building signalling the start of major upgrades to Arts Centre Melbourne – the first step in the Melbourne Arts Precinct transformation.

NH has been working with the team since 2015 to plan the sensitive restoration works alongside the design of a more comprehensive upgrade of the building’s facilities.

The new design will enhance the experience of the theatre for both patrons and performers. Improved acoustics, upgraded seating and universal access facilities will all bring the theatre experience up to global standards. Improvements are also planned for the back of house spaces, which will add new loading docks, scenery lifts, a green room and rehearsal

Last week some of our team visited our site out at Northern Hospital 👷‍♀️👷‍♂️

This facility is one of three projects we’re working on as part of the 492-million-dollar Mental Health Beds Expansion with NTC Architects and the Victorian Health Building Authority.

We learnt about how our team has been working to implement the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. This project has been designed and delivered using a co-design process together with people who have lived experience of mental illness.

Project architect Devin showed us how spaces have been carefully planned so that communal areas and family rooms have access to daylight and views to the outside and into internal courtyards or winter gardens. The entry experience for consumers has also been carefully considered to reduce disorientation and distress.

Erin from talked us through the installation of the modular elements. Modular construction is being used to speed up the build of these urgently needed acute mental health facilities.
